BRATTLEBORO-The Windham County Humane Society (WCHS) says it is holding its annual Pet Remembrance Night "to honor the pets we've loved and the lives we've shared with them" on Monday, Aug. 26.
"We thought [...] they are our favorite friends to snuggle with after a long day, are often present during our important life moments, and for many of us helped us cope during stressful times," said WCHS Executive Director Maya Richmond, "and when they depart, we grieve."
At the Pet Remembrance Night Ceremony, the Humane Society displays lanterns, each with the name of a lost pet and a custom message. This year's event will be held at WCHS's newly renovated building on West River Road (Route 30). They invite animal lovers to purchase lanterns in memory of their beloved pets and to join other animal lovers at the ceremony.
"Last year, over 200 pets were honored," said Richmond. "The entire night was full of laughter as people swapped stories about their lost friends."
You don't have to attend to be part of the event. Each Lantern of Love will be displayed, and event photos will be posted on WCHS's Facebook page.
WCHS uses the money from the sale of lanterns to provide veterinary care to the hundreds of homeless animals it adopts into new homes. Lanterns of Love for the ceremony may be purchased at windhamcountyhumane.org. One lantern costs $20, and each additional lantern is $10.
