BRATTLEBORO — Join the Arts Council of Windham County (ACWC) as it celebrates the 35th year of Student Arts Month in March.
Throughout Student Arts Month, the community celebrates blossoming young artists in Windham County and recognizes the teachers and school infrastructures that help these artists to bloom. ACWC has partnered with venues, schools, and teachers to arrange activities featuring the work of young artists throughout Windham County.
Gayle Marie Weitz, artist, co-owner of Artageus1, and an Arts Council of Windham County trustee, highlighted the importance of this annual event and why the board is involved.
“Student Art Month provides an annual opportunity for the ACWC to acknowledge the wonderful visual artwork produced by the youth in Windham County. It is a time to share in their accomplishments and to experience the creativity of childhood.”
Festivities will begin with openings of the High School Visual Art Show on Gallery Walk on Friday, March 6. Two and three-dimensional art will be displayed at the following locations in Brattleboro: 2D works, including photography, will be hung at the River Garden Gallery, 157 Main St, and the 3D works will be at Vermont Artisans Design (Gallery 2), 106 Main St., on the second floor on Main Street.
Both shows will be available for viewing through March 31.
An opening reception during Gallery Walk at The River Garden will feature The Snaz, who will be performing from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The public will also have the opportunity to vote for their favorite pieces by casting ballots at “Peoples Choice Awards” boxes.
Art by elementary school students will be on view at the Brooks Memorial Library and at many other locations around Windham County for the month of March. Music, drama, and dance performances will take place at venues around the county.
Student Art Month is organized and presented by The Arts Council of Windham County (ACWC), an all-volunteer organization that has worked to strengthen the environment for artists and arts organizations in the area for 36 years. It is sponsored in part by Brattleboro Savings & Loan, the Brattleboro Reformer, C & S Wholesale Grocers print shop, and Vermont Artisans Design and Gallery 2.
“Brattleboro is well known as a quirky and creative place,” said ACWC co-president John Dimick. “Student Art Month is an opportunity for the young artists to showcase their creativity. By coming out and showing our support for their efforts. we are showing them that they are valuable members of our community and an important part of what makes Brattleboro and Windham County a special place to live and work.”
