-The Southern Vermont League (SVL) recently announced their all-league honors for boys' and girls' basketball, and for Nordic skiing. Plenty of our local athletes were honored.
• Brattleboro's Jack Cady was named to the SVL A Division boys' first team, with teammates John Satterfield and Oscar Korson earning honorable mention.
In the C Division, Twin Valley's Brayden Brown and Green Mountain's Tanner Swisher were first team selections. Honorable mentions included Caleb Merrow of Green Mountain, Cody Hescock and Ely White of Leland & Gray, and Niko Gerding and Steve Oyer of Twin Valley.
• Brattleboro's Reese Croutworst was named to the SVL A Division girls' first team. Teammate Abigail Henry received honorable mention.
In the C Division, Green Mountain's Colie Roby, Leland & Gray's Abigail Emerson, and Laura Kamel and Abby Nystrom of Bellows Falls were all selected to the first team. Honorable mentions included Nola Sciacca of Bellows Falls, Sophia Cherubini of Green Mountain, and Samantha Morse of Leland & Gray.
In the D Division, Twin Valley's Kate Oyer was named to the first team, while teammate Alanna Bevilacqua received honorable mention.
• Two Brattleboro skiers were named to the SVL all-league Nordic team - Nico Conathan-Leach on the boys' team and Maayan Coleman on the girls' team.
Spring season gets rolling next week
• Brattleboro opens its baseball season on Thursday, April 10, at 5 p.m., at Tenney Field against St. Johnsbury, followed by road games at Rutland on Tuesday, April 22 and Windsor on Monday, April 28.
Bellows Falls opens with a pair of road games at Rutland on Saturday, April 12, and at Fair Haven on Tuesday, April 15, before hosting their first home game at Hadley Field on Saturday, April 19, at 11 a.m. against Hartford.
Leland & Gray opens their season in Chester on Friday, April 11, at 4:30 p.m. when the Rebels face Green Mountain. The Rebels' home opener is Thursday, April 17, at 4:30 p.m. against Arlington.
Twin Valley opens their season on Tuesday, April 8 at 4:30 p.m. at Arlington, and won't play again until Wednesday, April 23, when the Wildcats travel to Townshend to play Leland & Gray.
• Brattleboro begins their softball season with a pair of home games at Sawyer Field - on April 8 against Agawam, Massachusetts at 4:30 p.m., and on Thursday, April 10, against St. Johnsbury at 5 p.m.
Bellows Falls hosts Leland & Gray in the opener for both teams on April 11 at 4:30 p.m. in Westminster. Leland & Gray has its home opener on Monday, April 14, at 4:30 p.m. against Long Trail.
Twin Valley opens their season at Arlington on April 11 and plays its home opener in Whitingham on Friday, April 25, at 4:30 p.m. against Rutland.
• Brattleboro boys' lacrosse begins their season with three road games - April 8 in Rutland, April 10 in Manchester against Burr & Burton, and Wednesday, April 23, at Keene, New Hampshire. The Bears' home opener will be on Friday, April 25, at 7 p.m., against Rutland.
• Brattleboro girls' lacrosse opens with a pair of games in Massaschusetts -Wednesday, April 9, at Southwick Regional, and Tuesday, April 22, at Amherst-Pelham Regional. The Bears will then have their home opener at Natowich Field on Tuesday, April 24, at 7 p.m. against Woodstock.
• Brattleboro will open the track & field season with a multi-team meet in Arlington on April 15, and will host Mount Anthony and Bellows Falls on the Freeman Track on April 22, at 4 p.m. Bellows Falls starts the track season at St. Johnsbury on April 15.
• The Bellows Falls girls' tennis team starts another season without a home court. The Terriers will host Burr & Burton at the Vermont Academy courts in Saxtons River on April 9 at 5:30 p.m., and travel to Brattleboro on April 11 for a 4:30 p.m. match against the Bears.
• The Brattleboro boys' tennis team open their season with four straight road matches, beginning with a trip to Manchester to face Burr & Burton on April 11. They will open their home season against Rutland on Wednesday, April 30, at 4:30 p.m.
• Ultimate disc begins on April 14 when Leland & Gray hosts Long Trail for a 4:30 p.m. game. No schedule was available for the Brattleboro team.
Rockin'Ham 5K race is this Saturday
• The eighth annual Rockin'Ham 5K race takes place on Saturday, April 5, at Central Elementary School, 50 School St., Bellows Falls. This family-friendly event welcomes participants of all ages, including elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as adults.
The race starts at 10:30 a.m., with race day registration from 9 to 10:15 a.m. The course consists of two 2.5 kilometer laps around Bellows Falls beginning and ending at Central Elementary School.
"This event brings out the best in our community," race co-coordinator Kerry Pickering said in a news release. "This is a super fun, family-friendly event, and if you haven't come to a previous Rockin'Ham 5K, this is the year to do it!"
A raffle drawing will also be held on race day with dozens of prizes to be given away. Raffle tickets may be purchased from any Central School student or by contacting the school at 802-463-4346.
The entry fee is $25. There will be prizes for the top male and female finishers and medals for all participants. All proceeds from this event benefit Central School and are used for programs, equipment, field trips, and residencies for Central School students.

Rec. Dept. hosts Super Fun Bike Day
• The Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Department will host its annual Super Fun Bike Day at Living Memorial Park on Saturday, April 12, in cooperation with the Brattleboro Kiwanis Club, Brattleboro Fire & EMS Department, the Brattleboro Police Department, Burrows Sports, and Casella Waste Management.
This program will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In the event of rain, this event will be moved into the Living Memorial Park Nelson Withington Skating Facility.
Free bike helmets will be available for those under the age of 16. Those 16 and older will need to pay $10 per helmet. Helmets are sponsored by the Brattleboro Kiwanis Club.
In addition to the helmets, the following will also be free: three bikes will be raffled off, a bike obstacle course, a tune-up station, bounce houses from Bounce Above the Rest, popcorn, cotton candy, and hot dogs. There will also be Touch-a-Truck with the Brattleboro Fire Department, bike safety talks with Brattleboro Police Department, and lots of bike-themed swag. For more information call the Rec. Dept. • Week 11 of the winter/spring season of the Brattleboro Senior Bowling League at Brattleboro Bowl on March 27 saw Renegades (37-18) have a 5-0 week to move back into first place. Full Monty (37-19) went 4-1 and dropped down to second place, followed by Double Trouble (33-22), Slo Movers (31-24), Wayne's World (30-25), Charlie's Angels and Sandbaggers (both 29-26), Niners (26-29), and Let 'Em Roll (22-33).
Doris Lake had the women's high handicap game (239) and series (636), while Rich Pietro had the men's high handicap game (251) and series (664). Let 'Em Roll had the high team handicap game (874) and Double Trouble had the high handicap series (2,439).
Kevin Napaver again had the men's high scratch series (624) with games of 225, 202, and 197, while Pietro had a 586 series with games of 225 and 191. Warren Corriveau Sr. had a 581 series with games of 202 and 192, Robert Rigby had a 580 series with games of 204 and 194, Milt Sherman had a 538 series with a 204 game, Gary Montgomery had a 531 series with a 190 game, Mike Pavlovich had a 516 series with a 211 game, Jerry Dunham had a 514 series, and Rick Westcott had a 506 series.
Carol Gloski again had the women's high scratch series (445) and game (160). Diane Cooke had a 153 game.
