Youth group holds chili supper fundraiser for service trip to North Carolina

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro Area Interfaith Youth Group will hold its first fundraiser, a chili supper, on Saturday, Jan. 25, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Guilford Community Church, 38 Church Drive.

This event will raise money for the youth group's service and learning trip to Asheville, North Carolina, this April. There, 16 young people and five adults from the Greater Brattleboro area representing Christian, Muslim, and Jewish faith communities will spend a week assisting local nonprofits in Hurricane Helene recovery efforts.

The menu at the chili supper consists of both beef and vegetarian chili and cornbread, with desserts and beverages. The suggested donation is $15 for adults, less for children 12 and under. No reservations are required for the supper.

The Interfaith Youth Group says it builds a multicultural community through friendships, fun, and service. It is composed of young people - several who are recently resettled refugees from the Congo and elsewhere - interested in sharing their cultures, providing peer support, and learning about each other while doing community service each month. Learn about mammals in winter at BEEC

BRATTLEBORO - Back by popular demand, Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center (BEEC) naturalist Patti Smith will present her favorite subjects in her favorite season in a four-part series, "Mammals of Winter: In the Classroom and the Field." Sessions will meet on Sunday afternoons from 12:30 to 4:00 p.m.

This dive into the lives of wildlife will serve as a springboard for those who want to become more familiar with our mammalian neighbors using tracking and field observation skills. Each session will cover a group of winter-active mammals, beginning with photos, videos, slides, and artifacts in the BEEC farmhouse. Participants will then drive to a field site or two to look for tracks and signs and develop the skills needed to read them.

The schedule is as follows:

• "The Long and Low," Jan. 26.

• "The Leggy League," Feb. 16.

• "The Small and Speedy," March 2.

• "The Corpulent Clan," March 30.

The cost is $35 per session ($30 for BEEC members) or $105 ($90 for BEEC members) for all four. See beec.org to learn more. To register, visit bit.ly/799-mammals.
