Housing nonprofit honors memory of Byron Stookey

BRATTLEBORO-Byron Stookey, who died earlier this year, was the spearheading founder of Brattleboro Area Affordable Housing (BAAH) - a nonprofit organization made up of volunteers who work to create, maintain, and support affordable housing in this community.

The BAAH Board of Directors has made it its mission to carry out Stookey's vision. The nine-person board maintains a variety of programs.

The Apartments in Homes program assists people who have spare room in their homes to create affordable apartments. The Housing Improvement Program helps low-income people with safety issues in their homes to find and pay for contractors to perform remedial work. The Creative Community Housing Program makes financial support available to folks in crisis to pay a security deposit for an apartment or a driver's license fee for transportation to work.

"Byron's vision was to see every one of us in decent, safe and affordable housing," the board said in a news release. "The impact BAAH has in our community today would not be possible without your steady support and continued contributions to our organization. The need for safe housing never abates. This Giving Tuesday, please make a contribution to BAAH, for, as Byron said, 'There's just too much work to be done!'"

Gifts to BAAH are tax-deductible and may be sent to BAAH, P.O. Box 1284, Brattleboro, VT 05302. You may also give online at baahvermont.org/support-baah/donations.
