Soil management workshop offered at Walker Farm

EAST DUMMERSTON - On Thursday, July 18, from 9 a.m. to noon, join the Windham County Natural Resources Conservation District (WCNRCD), for a high tunnel soil management workshop at Walker Farm on Route 5.

Participants will learn how Walker Farm utilizes their high tunnels and hear what programs and tools are available to manage soils, to maintain high tunnels, to manage soil health in high tunnels, and to seize funding opportunities for conservation practices.

Also available will be on-the-spot soil analysis for anyone who brings a soil sample to the workshop. Those interested should bring two cups of their soil in a sealed plastic bag and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will perform an analysis and share the heavy metal concentrations results.

This workshop is open to farmers, gardeners, and food growers of all sizes. Participants should dress appropriately for walking and being outside in the July weather. Drinks and light snacks will be provided, but attendants should bring their own water. The event is free and registration is required at bit.ly/773-soil. For additional information, questions, or for assistance in registration, contact Heather Blunk at [email protected] or 802-689-3024.

Peace and Justice Party holds celebration

BRATTLEBORO - The Green Mountain Peace and Justice Party (previously Liberty Union) is hosting a Celebration of Peace and Justice at the Brattleboro Common, rain or shine, on Sunday, July 21, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Organizers said this event "will provide people with an opportunity to meet with friends and neighbors, and artists and activists, who envision more collaborative rather than competitive social structures, who are dedicated to protecting our constitutional rights, who are concerned about reparations, the environment, labor laws, restorative justice, etc. This will be a time to celebrate what strides have been made, build coalitions, and create positive visions for the future and each other."

There will be live music and dancing, henna tattoos, and light refreshments at this free event. To arrange to share performing art or to speak about issues connected to peace and justice, or to set up a table for your creative work or organization, call 802-624-6116.

RFPL hosts class on foraging safely

BELLOWS FALLS - The Rockingham Free Public Library, 65 Westminster St., will host a Foraging Safely class with artist and author Gaal Shepherd Crowl on Monday, July 22, at 5 p.m.

Crowl will share her years of foraging knowledge to help guide those in their own practice. Since taking her first class on mushrooms at Vermont Institute of Natural Science in 1988, she has gained confidence in her ability to identify fungi and by training the eyes to see subtle differences to have safely eaten 52 varieties.

"Mushroom hunting is a lot like treasure hunting," Crowl said in a news release. "Very interesting and sometimes exciting when you happen upon a big find! But it is for the seriously careful."

The class is free, but space is limited to 15 participants. Registration is required. Contact the library at 802-463-4270 or [email protected] to reserve your spot or be put on the waitlist.

Poetry book at Everyone's Books to support new Groundworks shelter

BRATTLEBORO - Everyone's Books on Elliot Street will be selling a poetry collection, Without a Roof, with all proceeds to benefit Groundworks' urgently needed new shelter. The author, Louise Rader, is a widely published Write Action poet and retired psychotherapist who volunteered as a therapist at Morningside Shelter.

Poet Judith Janoo wrote in her endorsement: "Evocative and unflinching, these poems portray faces of homelessness. Powerful poems that emerge from a lived life, from an accomplished poet with a pure and urgent voice. This collection reminds us, with each echoing image, of our common humanity."
