Hottest temps of 2019 arrive this weekend, cooler next week

Hello and good day to you, southeastern Vermonters! We have changeable and impactful weather on the way to our region, with the most salient point being a low chance for a heat wave in portions of Windham County beginning on Friday and lasting through the weekend.

Not only that, but the Heat Index (which is also known as the apparent temperature, and is a combination of the air temperature and dew point temperature) could push over 100 degrees in spots!

Before the hottest days of 2019 arrive this weekend, we will be dealing with very humid conditions as the remnants of Hurricane Barry track through the region Wednesday with scattered showers, downpours and thunderstorms.

Scattered showers and cooler temperatures arrive for Thursday before the heat kicks up late week and through the weekend, as previously mentioned.

Fortunately for us, however, the heat will break by this coming Monday night and humidity will lower dramatically by Tuesday as we re-enter more seasonable conditions. With that muggy picture painted, let's jump into the daily details!

For Wednesday, we can expect scattered showers during the morning, and a few may be heavy given that the humidity will be increasing substantially.

Mostly cloudy skies are expected, but some sunny periods are possible. How much sun we get will impact the strength of any downpours and thunderstorms that are expected to impact some of us Wednesday afternoon into the evening.

Highs will reach the low 80s in the high terrain, and the mid to upper 80s in the lower elevations nearest the Connecticut River. Isolated flash flooding can't be ruled out either, as some storms may “back build” and keep regenerating over the same areas. Lows Wednesday night will hang in the low to mid 60s.

For Thursday, a frontal boundary is expected to be pulled southward through southern Vermont as the remnants of Barry pull away to the south and east. We should see a cooler, more stable, and mostly cloudy day with a few scattered showers possible, especially during the first half of the day.

High temps are tricky to call at this point, and may just remain in the 70s for much of the region. Lows will drop to the mid 60s with an isolated shower or storm possible.

By Friday, a southeast U.S. ridge will flex with vigor, allowing high heat and humidity to pour into the region from the southwest. Highs on Friday will be in the mid 80s to low 90s, in the upper 80s to mid 90s for Saturday, and in the mid 80s to low 90s for Sunday.

An isolated shower or thunderstorm is possible each afternoon and lows will only reach the mid 60s to low 70s each night. By Tuesday morning, temps and humidity will drop substantially with fair weather expected. Have a great week!
