WARDSBORO — Three musical duos, each composed of a married couple, from three parts of the globe, are coming together for “an international indie-pop-folk spectacular” in Wardsboro, according to a news release.
Karla Kane and The Corner Laughers (California), Fun of the Pier (England), and Hungrytown (Vermont) will join forces to perform on Saturday, Sept. 8, at Wardsboro Town Hall, 71 Main St., starting at 7 p.m. Admission is $10.
Kane and Khoi Huynh are best known as The Corner Laughers, which The Guardian calls “like a West Coast Belle and Sebastian ... sassy and smart, intelligent and intricate, twee with bite.”
Kane's solo debut, King's Daughters Home for Incurables, leads listeners into an intriguing land of acorns and tea leaves; feminism and fairy tales; pagan pop and pastoral protest songs; where sunny California indie meets melancholy English folk. After more than a decade of world-wide touring and three album releases, the Vermont-based folk duo Hungrytown (Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson) have earned a reputation for the quality and authenticity of their songwriting.
“It's great to hear an act eschew sentimentality in favor of honesty and to prove that you don't have to go raiding the memory of others to find the stuff that really good songs are made of,” writes Jedd Beaudoin of Popmatters. Their touring schedule is available at hungrytown.net.
Fun of the Pier (Helen and Mark Luker) are a sunshine/harmony/acoustic pop band from Nottingham, England. Influenced by Neil Finn, Ben Folds and even Metallica, they say they especially like playing shows to appreciative, considerate audiences.
Their award-winning debut album, 14:42, has been called “a wonderful, delightful collection of songs, expertly performed” by Pure Pop Radio and named Twirl Radio's favorite debut album of the year. More information is available at facebook.com/funofthepier.
