Labor Day Dawn Dance returns to Gibson-Aiken

BRATTLEBORO — The 2018 Labor Day Dawn Dance begins on Sunday, Sept. 2, at 8 p.m. at the Gibson-Aiken Center, 207 Main St., and concludes on Monday, Sept. 3, at 7 a.m.

Organizers say they'll have “three super exciting bands and callers” for this annual marathon contra dance that starts at sundown and lasts until the sun comes up the next morning and the lights go out.

Tickets are $25-$30 for adults (sliding scale), $20-$30 for students and seniors. A limited number of tickets will go on sale on Sept. 2 at the door starting at 7:30 p.m. Capacity is limited to 400 dancers.

Here's the schedule for this year's dance:

• Contra Dancing (8 to 11:30 p.m.), Will Mentor calls with Great Bear.

• Couples Dancing (11:30 to 11:50 p.m.) and Contra Dancing (midnight to 3:30 a.m.), Jean Gibson-Gorrindo calls with Cloud Ten - Cedar Stanistreet, fiddle; Donal Sheets, guitar, cello; Arthur Davis, piano, banjo, and trumpet; and Ness Smith-Savedoff, drums.

• Contra Dancing (3:30 to 7 a.m.), Hannah Otten calls with Buddy System - Noah VanNorstrand, fiddle, and Julie Vallimont, piano.

Because of changes at the Stone Church, there will be no English dancing offered in the afternoon this year before the Dawn Dance.
