Town seeks to fill vacancies on boards
BRATTLEBORO - The Town of Brattleboro is looking for citizens to serve on the following committees and boards: Agricultural Advisory Board, Arts Committee, Citizen Police Communications Committee, Conservation Commission, Design Review Committee (Alternate), Development Review Board (Alternate), Energy Committee, Energy Coordinator, Inspector of Lumber, Shingles & Wood, Planning Commission, Senior Solutions Advisory Council, Traffic Safety Committee (Chamber of Commerce Representative), and Weigher of Coal.

The Selectboard will make appointments at its Aug. 21 meeting. Applications must be received in the Town Manager's office by noon on Aug. 16 for appointment at that meeting. Applications received later for seats still available will be considered at a subsequent Selectboard meeting.
Meal planned for Townshend seniors
TOWNSHEND - Everyone is invited to dinner at noon on Thursday, Aug. 16, at the Townshend Church.
Sponsored by Senior Solutions, the food is prepared by Chef Stephanie of the Townshend Dam Diner and served family-style.
Suggested donation is $3.50 for people age 60 and up; all others $4. Take-outs will be available. People of all ages are welcome!
Vernon Historians plan Mums Sale
VERNON - The annual Mums Sale will be held on Sunday, Aug. 19, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Vernon Historical Museum located at 4201 Fort Bridgman Road (Route 142) in Vernon, one mile north of the Massachusetts border.
The sale is a fundraiser for the Vernon Historians and will feature a selection of mum plants from Griffin Gardens.
The museum and museum annex building will be open for visitors during the sale and is open each year, from June through September, on Sunday afternoons from 2 to 4 p.m. or by appointment.
Compassionate Friends to meet
WEST BRATTLEBORO - The Compassionate Friends of Brattleboro, the local branch of a national self-help organization for families that have had a child die, will hold its next monthly meeting Sunday, Aug. 19, at 2 p.m., at the West Village Meetinghouse, 29 South Street. Meetings are held each month the third Sunday of the month at the same time and location.
The Compassionate Friends is a national nonprofit organization with more than 650 chapters in the U.S. Chapters welcome immediate family members to attend, including adult siblings.
Meetings are for all families regardless of race, religious orientation, economic background, or the cause of death and age of the child.
Brattleboro AARP hosts potluck picnic
BRATTLEBORO - A potluck picnic will be held in the Senior Picnic Area at Brattleboro Memorial Park on Tuesday, Aug. 21, at noon.
This will be a fun event to meet and greet fellow AARP members, Windham County retired educators, and friends. The event is open to all, and AARP is accepting new members. Please bring a dish to share.

Learn about 'The Weapons of Fraud' at Brooks Library
BRATTLEBORO - On Wednesday, Aug. 22, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Elliott Greenblott from AARP will present a workshop titled “The Weapons of Fraud: Con Artists, Fraud, Scams” at Brooks Memorial Library on Main Street.
This program is designed to provide Brattleboro residents of all ages with comprehensive educational services to avoid victimization by scammers. This event is free and open to the public.
Entries sought for Bondville Fair
BONDVILLE - The 221st edition of the Bondville Fair takes place at the end of August, when fairgoers can participate in one of Vermont's oldest traditions and the oldest continuous fair in the U.S.
The Ailene Capen Floral Hall is once again where local garden produce, cooking specialties, artistic endeavors, and original works are judged and on display free to all.
In the Elizabeth Chichton Quilt Hall, the Bondville Fair Quilt Show takes place all weekend. Any quilt, Vermont made or not, old or contemporary, is welcome to be entered. Youth quilts can be “works in progress” and still be admitted to the show.

Entries for both Halls are accepted Thursday, Aug. 23, from 4 to 6 p.m., and Friday, Aug. 24, from 9 to 11 a.m. Two items per category for adults are allowed, with unlimited entries for vegetables and fruit, and for all children's items in all categories. Judging will take place from 11 a.m. to noon Aug. 24.
The Hall is open for viewing from noon on Aug. 24, and opens at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, and Sunday, Aug. 26. Entries must be picked up on Sunday no later than 4 p.m.
