DUMMERSTON — The Selectboard began to identify their yearly goals at the April 11 regular Board meeting.
“Traditionally, each year in the spring, when the daffodils start coming up, the Selectboard begins thinking about if there are any special projects they want to undertake for the rest of the year,” explained Selectboard Chair Zeke Goodband.
He invited Board members to begin compiling their own lists of goals for the year for future discussion.
Board member Maria Glabach noted there is often a special Selectboard meeting where they deliberate and set their goals.
Board member Jerelyn Wilson asked Goodband if he had any suggestion for the Selectboard's plans.
“Funny you should ask!” Goodband said.
He mentioned the town's animal control ordinance, which Goodband estimated was written in 1991, and has “some shortcomings, [which] make it difficult to address some of the problems that come up between dog owners and their neighbors."
The fixes could either be minor, or the Selectboard could subject the animal control ordinance to a complete overhaul, Goodband said.
Selectboard member Rachel Glickman said the Board should update the list of appointed town positions.
Goodband noted the Legislature is addressing whether towns must elect the positions of Grand Juror and Town Agent. The bill, H.372, sponsored by Rep. Laura Sibilia (Dover), is currently in the House Committee on Government Operations.
Wilson asked if towns still need to maintain the Weigher of Coal position. Goodband didn't have an answer, but noted, “You don't often get called out in the middle of the night to weigh some coal, so it's a pretty cushy job.”
Glickman pointed out its “nostalgia factor,” which she said is important to some residents.
