BMC Celtic Band headlines contradance

BRATTLEBORO — The upcoming first Saturday “Wild Asparagus” contra dance in Greenfield, Mass., will feature the Brattleboro Music Center's Celtic Band, with nationally recognized caller George Marshall.

The long-running first-Saturday dance in Greenfield is typically hosted by the well-known “Wild Asparagus” dance band.

However, on June 3, the BMC Celtic Mega Band takes center stage. Keith Murphy, Becky Tracy, and their students are preparing an array of French Canadian, Irish, and original tunes for the occasion. All are invited to dance or listen.

The 8 p.m. event will be held at the Guiding Star Grange, 401 Chapman St., in Greenfield. General admission is $10. Students and seniors $8.

Contradance is made up of long lines of couples. It has mixed origins from English country dance, Scottish, and French dance. Most contradance events include a few dances of other kinds: traditional squares, waltz, polka, swing, and other couples dances.

Beginners are welcomed and encouraged; a beginners' workshop will start the evening.
