PUTNEY — Edie Chamberlin asked the Selectboard to support a resolution calling for President Donald J. Trump's impeachment.
During the March 27 regular Board meeting, Chamberlin said, “I was feeling very helpless, looking at the news and thinking, 'Holy mackerel! Where are we headed here?'"
“It's a question of doing something” about the president's policies, the Putney resident said.
Although Chamberlin acknowledged Congress has to make that decision, the movement “is supposed to be grassroots, so we should start here."
Selectboard Chair Scott Henry noted resolutions of this type usually happen at the end of Town Meeting, and that venue allows the Selectboard to better gauge voters' support on these issues.
“We don't want to speak for [everyone]” without knowing where voters stand on presidential impeachment, Henry said.
Henry encouraged Chamberlin to “start the dialogue [and] get it in front of as many people as possible."
If enough residents request the resolution, “the more appropriate it will be for us to respond to it,” Henry said.
Selectboard members encouraged Chamberlin to reach out to the congressional delegation, and to contact local representatives to the Vermont Legislature.
