BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro Music Center is celebrating the holidays a little early this year, thanks to a $500,000 gift from an anonymous donor.
The money supports the Center's ongoing capital campaign. Work has begun on the Guilford Street property that will be the Center's new home next summer.
“All of us at the BMC are deeply grateful to the donor for believing wholeheartedly in this project and for helping make our new music center a reality,” BMC Managing Director Mary Greene said in a news release. “Especially during this season when we look for the light, we're honored and excited to receive what is truly a transformational gift.”
The initial phase of the capital campaign has resulted in commitments of more than $2.5 million from loyal friends and several foundations to purchase and renovate most of the Music School, but an estimated $1 million will be necessary to build the auditorium, create a separate endowed fund for building maintenance, and refurbish pianos, harpsichords, and other instruments prior to the move.
“I believe the BMC is an important force for good in our community,” the individual who donated the $500,000 gift said in the news release. “To be able to help create a new BMC home for music is really thrilling. For me, it's all about civic responsibility. I want to ensure the success of this project and keep the musical arts thriving in our community."
