Winter has arrived!

I'm wishing you well on this day, and thank you as always for reading my (hopefully sensible) ramblings on our weekly weather in southeastern Vermont. One thing is for sure - winter is arriving on schedule with the first real shot of Arctic air on the march, and by Saturday you will feel it in your bones. There's not much in the way of guarantees in the weather business, but the impending cold snap is a sure bet.

For Wednesday, snow will be ending during the morning, after a light accumulation of a coating to an inch or so in most places. A few high-elevation areas might wring out a little more, but it's a nuisance event with commuting impacts because it moves through very early in the morning. Some freezing drizzle is even possible before it quits, and leaves us with a cloudy day with highs in the mid to upper 30s and lows in the 20s.

For Thursday, the first of two cold fronts moves through the region, and could kick up some lake effect snow showers, and some upslope snow showers. The former are generated from cold air passing over warmer moist air and depositing it as snow to the east of the Great Lakes. The latter are formed when persistent westerly winds meet up with low level moisture near the mountains, condensing and forming mountain snows, which we could see Thursday afternoon, night and Friday morning with the frontal passage. Some coatings are possible in a few spots, and highs will only reach the low to mid 30s, and lows in the low 20s.

On Friday, the second front blasts through with our first cold Arctic blast of the season. Highs will likely fail to reach 30 degrees, lows will be down in the very low teens, and wind gusts could reach 40 mph, knocking wind chill readings down into the single digits above zero, and maybe reach 0 in a few spots.

Saturday is the heart of the cold, with highs only in the low 20s! Wind chills will again be in the single digits, so bundle up folks! Lows around 10 degrees.

Sunday starts off partly sunny with highs in the upper 20s, but clouds up late in the day, with another potential winter storm for Sunday night into Monday. Tuesday looks like fair weather at the moment. Have a great week!
