TOWNSHEND — There will be a multi-band benefit concert featuring many well-known local bands on the Townshend Common on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m., to raise money in the aftermath of an Aug. 3 fire that damaged one wing of the Valley Cares assisted living facility.
Valley Cares was struck by lightning on Aug. 3, and the lightning strike ignited the attic, according to fire officials. The 39 residents of Valley Cares were safely evacuated as the facility's sprinkler system contained the fire.
The next day, firefighters responded to a second fire at the facility, also linked to the initial lightning strike.
One wing, including 11 apartments, was heavily damaged. Residents in that wing lost all their belongings, but there no injuries and all the residents have been temporarily relocated to other facilities.
As a nonprofit affordable housing organization, operating with very small margins on an ongoing basis, Valley Cares officials say this situation will have a huge financial impact which is yet to be determined. Despite very good insurance coverage, hidden losses were sustained that are difficult to account for, including losses by residents whose personal belongings were uninsured.
Concert goers should bring a chair and/or blanket. Food vendors will be on site. Admission is free. Donation baskets will be circulating throughout the concert to benefit Valley Cares.
