Brattleboro Swim Team captures Southern Vermont Swim League Division I championship for fourth straight year

BRATTLEBORO — On Saturday, July 25, the Brattleboro Swim Team (BST) captured the Division I Southern Vermont Swim League (SVSL) District Championship held in Rutland.

This is the fourth consecutive year BST has captured the district title.

BST's age 10-and-under swimmers established a solid lead in the morning and the afternoon swimmers built on that lead with a final team score of 1264.5. The Manchester Triton Swim Team came in second with a total of 832.5 points and the Rutland Swim Team in third with 761 points.

Highlights of the meet include the breaking of three SVSL championship records in the boys 13-14 category by Andrew Brooks.

Brooks swam the 50 yard freestyle in 24.21 seconds, breaking a 1997 record previously set by Bennington's David Lutz. He also broke current BST assistant coach Ben Cooper's record in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1 minute, 1.18 seconds. Finally, Brooks broke another 1997 record in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 53.04.

During the morning session, BST's younger swimmers performed very well, including 9-year-old Will Hill, who went undefeated in all of his individual events, racking up points for the team.

Kennedy Taylor, 7, came in first in the girls' 8-and-under 100 individual medley, while BST's 8-and-under girls' freestyle relay team (Parker Thibault, Meredith Lewis, Adelaide Redden, and Kennedy Taylor) took first place, as did the boys' 10-and-under freestyle relay team (Willem Thurber, Cameron Cruz, Jordan Allembert, and Will Hill).

During the afternoon session, the older swimmers continued the momentum by capturing first place in four relay events: the boys' 14-and-under 200 medley team (Michael Fernandez, Andrew Prah, Andrew Brooks, and Matt Brooks); the girls' 19-and-under 200 freestyle team (Harper Baldwin, Grace Reeder, Lillian Fisher, and Isabelle Magbie); the boys' 12-and-under 200 freestyle team (Finn Fisher, Ben Connor, Calvin Gould, and Ernie Antonucci) and the boys 14-and-under 200 freestyle team (Matt Brooks, Andrew Prah, Michael Fernandez, and Andrew Brooks) that fell just short of a league record by 0.28 seconds.

In addition, BST swimmers captured numerous first place finishes in the afternoon session including: Ernie Antonucci in the boys' 12-and-under 100 and 200 freestyle; Michael Fernandez in the boys' 11-12 100 IM, 50 butterfly, 50 backstroke and 50 breaststroke; Isabelle Magbie in the girls' 15-16 200 IM, 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly; Lillian Fisher in the girls' 15-16 200 freestyle; Matt Dulmaine in the Boys 15-16 50 and 100 breaststroke; Molly Schoales in the girls' 17-19 100 butterfly; Harper Baldwin in the girls' 17-19 200 freestyle; and Cameron Wright in the boys' 17-19 50 freestyle, 50 butterfly, and 50 and 100 breaststroke events.
