DUMMERSTON — The big Quarry Road culvert project nears an end, according to Dummerston's Roads Foreman Lee Chamberlin.
Chamberlin told the Selectboard at its June 24 regular meeting the work may be finished within two weeks.
“Everything seems to be going well,” he said.
“They're pouring the headwalls now,” Chamberlin reported, adding, “once they get that complete, then they backfill, and [put in] guard rails."
The project is “a little bit behind schedule,” Chamberlin said. Weather is to blame, especially the heavy rains of a few weeks ago that interfered with the setting of the concrete.
In a follow-up email to The Commons, Selectboard Chair Ezekiel Goodband added construction was also delayed “because the arch portion of the culvert was not ready in time. The preferred time to do this sort of work is during the summer when stream levels tend to be lower."
“The arch that was used does not create a barrier to aquatic life going up or down stream; this is on a tributary of the West River,” Goodband said in his email.
According to Town Treasurer/Selectboard Assistant Laurie Frechette, the Quarry Road project is being funded by a $150,000 Structures Grant through the Vermont Agency of Transportation. The town's matching funds requirement is $15,000.
