Sixth-grade TGS composers selected again for Opus concert

PUTNEY — “Morning Melody,” a trio for French horn, piano and snare drum composed by sixth-graders Amelia Opsahl and Wells Mundell-Wood from The Grammar School in Putney, was selected for Opus 29, and was recently performed by professional musicians at the Opus 29 Concert at St. Michael's College in Colchester.

Members of the sixth grade class entered three compositions into the Opus 29 competition run by Music-COMP, and this is the second time work by Opsahl and Mundell-Wood was selected. Alli Lubin is their music teacher and mentor, and they received instruction from professional Vermont composers as part of the Music-COMP program.

Eight fifth-graders and one sixth-grader were scheduled to accompany the composers for an afternoon of workshops and rehearsals, followed by a dinner and the concert. Because of inclement weather, the students were unable to travel north for the concert.

The Grammar School is planning a performance of the composition by local musicians at a school assembly in the near future.

The fifth-graders are working on their entries for the spring Opus 30 competition for woodwinds and strings.
