Entries sought for ‘The Art of Climate Change’

BRATTLEBORO — Post Oil Solutions, in partnership with the Arts Council of Windham County, seeks 20 artists to create paintings that explore climate change, for which they will receive $175.

“The Art of Climate Change” is an exhibition of artwork exploring this planetary crisis - what it is, how it affects us physically and psychologically, and how some are working to adapt to it or help stop it.

Post Oil Solutions says in a press release that this project is one way it works to engage the community in creative and imaginative ways on a subject that many people might prefer to avoid.

According to Tim Stevenson, Post Oil's founding director, although opinion polls show a growing awareness and acceptance of climate change, “most Americans rank it near the bottom of their concerns, perhaps even more than the melting of the Arctic ice and the phenomenon of climate lag.”

He adds, “This absence of citizen involvement is an ominous fact that needs to change if we're to avoid climate catastrophe.”

As part of the project, artists are asked to send three samples of their work and a color sketch of a proposed 2-D art piece depicting “some aspect of climate change and/or [that] shows what we can do to adapt to as well as mitigate climate change.”

Artists chosen to create a work for this exhibit will be given a lightweight, wooden panel of 36 inches by 40 inches as backing for their work, and a stipend of $175.

The stipend will be awarded when finished work is delivered to Post Oil Solutions, due by July 15, and secures Post Oil's property of the piece, including reproduction rights.

“However, if Post Oil were to sell or auction the paintings as a fundraising event, the artists would realize 40 percent of the sale; and whenever Post Oil exhibits the paintings, artists would be identified,” the organization says.

Two-dimensional works such as painting, collage, photography, printmaking, and multi-media art are acceptable for the panels. Artists would be responsible for mounting, priming, or adhering any work to the panels, as well as adding wire for hanging on the back.

Deadline for entry is May 31. Send no more than three digital images of your work and one digital image of a sketch of your proposed artwork, along with your name, address, email address, and telephone number, to Tim Stevenson ([email protected]) or Susan Rosano ([email protected]).

Digital images must conform to the following technical specifications: RGB color, 72 ppi resolution, and JPEG format. For more information, contact either Stevenson or Rosano.
