• In Brattleboro (Memorial Hospital), Sept. 14, 2013, a daughter, Sophia Stevi Nadeau, to Schavon (Newton) and Josh Nadeau of Brattleboro; granddaughter to Bonnie and Gary Newton of Vernon, and Victoria and the late Steve Nadeau of Vernon.

• The AIDS Project of Southern Vermont has three new members joining its Board: Geoff Burgess, Ricky Davidson, and Robert Glennon, all of Brattleboro. Burgess has taught for 25 years at Landmark College in Putney and is the chair of the communications department. Davidson is the unit director of the Boys & Girls Club of Brattleboro and the overnight residential manager for the Youth Homeless Shelter. He is also vice chair of the BUHS #6 School Board and vice chair of the Play, Inc. board. Glennon has been the science teacher at Dummerston School for the past 15 years. He recently graduated summa cum laude from the UVM/Vermont State College's Vermont Science Initiative Masters of Science program in teaching.

Obituaries
• Wayne Thomas Beck, 63, of Londonderry. Died of cancer Oct. 4 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Husband of the late Donna Marilyn Beck for 39 years. Father of Matthew Beck of Littleton, Colo., and Jeremiah Beck of Londonderry. Brother of Marcia Duest of Danvers, Mass., Lorraine Daly of Peabody, Mass., and the late James and Donald Beck. Born in Salem, Mass., the son of James and Florence Beck, he graduated from Salem High School and, in 1983, from Honda of America as a certified mechanic. He was an outdoor enthusiast and an avid fan of auto racing. He also enjoyed music, building scale-model airplanes, maintaining his house and land, auto mechanics, and woodworking. • George Borofsky, 86, of Hooksett, N.H., formerly of Brattleboro. Died Oct. 7 after a short illness. Husband of the late Sharon Borofsky. Father of Cathy Smith of California, Lonnie Benzel of Florida, and Bruce Borofsky of New York. Brother of Stanley “Pal” Borofsky and his wife, Donna, of Brattleboro. He graduated from Brattleboro High School in 1943. As a youth, he participated in Friday night talent shows at the Paramount Theater in Brattleboro, playing the saxophone. He joined the Army in 1943 and was discharged just after the surrender of Japan ended World War II. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1948 with a B.S. in accounting and then worked at Sam's Army & Navy Store in Brattleboro. He was also employed at Maple State Lumber Co. in Dummerston, for a time. In 1956, he became an agent for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co., then obtained his designation as a C.P.C.U. He then opened his own commercial insurance agency in Manchester, N.H. in 1959. He enjoyed playing bridge, hosting weekly bridge games and ultimately became a Life Master. Memorial information: A graveside service was held Oct. 14 in the Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, N.H.
• Edward S. Coughlin, 82, of West Townshend. Died Oct. 6 at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend. Husband of Beverly Van Ness Coughlin for 56 years. Father of Douglas Coughlin and his wife, Donna, of Newark, Vt., and Barbara Williams and her husband, Chris, of Williamsville. Brother of Charles Coughlin and his wife, Beatrice, of Hendersonville, N.C., and the late Ernest, William, Michael, and Robert Coughlin. Born in Brattleboro, the son of the late William T. and Lola May (Smith) Coughlin, he graduated from Brattleboro High School. He then joined the Navy and served his country for four years. He was employed at Suburban Propane in Brattleboro for many years until his retirement. He enjoyed playing bingo and was an avid New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, and Notre Dame football fan. • Ida C. Dutton, 82, of Windham. Died Oct. 6 in Springfield Health and Rehabilation Center after a long illness. She lived in West Windham most of her life. In 1947, she married Herbert Dutton. Together, they raised six children and realized their dream of a registered Holstein dairy farm. Her favorite hobbies were gardening, sewing, quilting, reading and farming. She was predeceased by her husband, in 2008; her mother, Mildred Green; her father and stepfathers Delbert Chase, Frank Fisher and Arthur Green; and her siblings Raymond Chase, Carroll Fisher, and Margaret Woodruff. She is survived by her six children - Clara, Abigail, Rebecca, Paul and Stephen Dutton, and Ruth MacNeilage. Memorial information: A graveside service will be held at the Windham Cemetery at a future date.
• Elizabeth W. “Liz” Elder, 85, of Portland, Maine. Died Oct. 11. Wife of the late Robert M. Elder Sr. Mother of Merry Elder of Brattleboro; Heidi Piper and her husband, David, of Colorado Springs, CO; and Robert M. Elder Jr. of Portland. Predeceased by her parents and four siblings. Born in Rochester, N.Y, she grew up in the nearby town of Fairport, attending a one-room schoolhouse until high school. After school, she worked for Eastman Kodak and then traveled to 48 states with her father. A very caring and giving woman, she drove a bus for disabled children for many years. She became a CNA and, in the early 1980s, she moved to Portland to take care of her mother-in-law who became ill. She worked at the Barron Center and other local nursing homes, and also worked as an in-house caregiver for several people over the years. She was a longtime member of the Stevens Avenue Congregational Church. She was a member of the Ladies Guild at church, and an active member of the congregation. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and traveling; including a visit to Hawaii with her husband to make 49 states. She was intelligent, well read and had a wonderful unexpected dry wit. She was beloved by many, and will be missed by all. • Henry J. LeBlanc Jr., 50, of Brattleboro. Died Oct. 3 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Fiancé of Stephany Coon of Brattleboro. Father of Misty LeBlanc of Kentucky, Jeremy LeBlanc of Brunswick, N.Y., Casey LeBlanc of Wilmington, and Gwendelin Cusack of Brattleboro. Brother of Paul “Skip” Burdick, Robin LeBlanc, and Patricia Joly, all of Bennington, and Sandra Loomis of North Bennington. Born in Camden, N.J., the son of the late Henry J. LeBlanc Sr. and the former Lucille (VanNess) Hacking, he received his education in the Bennington schools. At the time of his illness, he was employed as night crew manager at Hannaford's in Brattleboro. He enjoyed campfires, riding his motorcycle, and helping his uncle Art, whom he called “Dad” when they worked together on the family property cutting wood. • Guy C. Miner Jr., 87, of Brattleboro. Died Oct. 8 at his home. Husband of the late Irene (Darling) Miner. Father of Kevin Miner and his wife, Lauri, of Newfane; Kerry Miner and his companion, Susan Mello, of Putney; Shawn Miner and his wife, Lynn, of Guilford; and Sherri Deyo and her husband, David, of Brattleboro. Brother of the late Isabel Miner. Born in Brattleboro, the son of the late Guy C., Sr. and Annabel H. (MacGinn) Miner, he was a lifelong resident of the Brattleboro area. He graduated from Brattleboro High School, Class of 1944. He served in the Army during World War II. He was employed as a quality control inspector for Boise Cascade for many years until his retirement in 1988. He enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, fishing, hunting, traveling, being a “snowbird” and spending winters in Florida, and watching and sharing his knowledge of the stock market. He was also a Red Sox fanatic. He had a great dry sense of humor, was extremely proud of his military career and his Scottish heritage, but his greatest and proudest achievement in life was his family; they meant the world to him. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whether it was attending their sporting events, family celebrations, or quiet time at home. • Nancy Campbell Reed, 84, a resident of Newfane and St. Petersburg, Fla. Died peacefully this past March in Seminole, Fla. Wife of Jack Reed for 57 years. Mother of John of Fairfax, Calif., Libby of Andover, Mass., Jeff of Allentown, Pa., and Jamie of Falls Church, Va. She was born in Scranton, Pa. Though her father had begun work as a coal miner at age 11, his worldview was large -- he faithfully read the Sunday New York Times, and encouraged his daughter to educate herself broadly. As a child, she taught herself to play piano on a $10 instrument with a Methodist hymnal. As a young adult, she was admitted to Vassar on a full academic scholarship. After their wedding in 1956, the Reeds lived in Washington D.C., Paris, London, and Bonn, following her husband's appointments as a foreign affairs officer. They moved to Newfane Hill in 1991, and were both fixtures in the musical and cultural communities of the Brattleboro area. As a professional pianist and organist, she taught at the Brattleboro Music Center for many years. She also served as organist at Centre Congregational Church in Brattleboro for six years. She accompanied many singers and instrumentalists in the area. The Reeds were regular patrons at the Yellow Barn and Marlboro Music Festivals. In 2000, the Vermont chapter of the American Guild of Organists named her their Artist of the Year. She was a lover of music, books, cooking, travel, and nature. She and Jack raised four children: She adored her eight grandchildren. Memorial information: A memorial service was held in St. Petersburg this past spring, and the family buried her ashes earlier this summer in Scranton. • Susan (Potter) Smith, 76, of West Wardsboro and Chesham, N.H. Died Oct. 4 at her home. Wife of Fredrick B. Smith for 34 years. Mother of Christine Poler Fleming and her husband, James, of Simsbury, Conn; Theodore Avery Poler of East Dover; Kimberly Poler Albanese and her husband, Marc, of Hudson, Mass., and Timothy Edson Poler and his wife, Sara, of Fairfield, Conn. Stepmother of Lisa Smith Ruoff, Wendy Sutton, Mark Smith, Curtis Smith, and Paige Beard. Sister of the late Jane W. Gowdy. Born in Boston, the daughter of the late Dr. Theodore Alexander and Constance (Dort) Potter, she was raised and educated in West Newton, Mass., and Chesham. She was a graduate of Pine Manor College. She was a prolific painter and accomplished artist whose vivid style was steeped firmly in New England realism. She had in fact just completed hanging a show titled “There Are Places I Remember… All My Life,” which is now at the library of Arlington, Vt. In her garden, studio, kitchen, in a boat or on a wooded trail, she found joy and shared it with all who loved her dearly. She and her loving family cherished their time together in Rowayton, Conn., and at Silver Lake in Chesham. For many years, she held membership in the Silver Mine Artist Guild of New Canaan, Conn. Memorial information: A memorial service was held Oct. 9 at Wardsboro Methodist Church. A private burial took place at the Willard Hill Cemetery in Chesham, N.H.
