BRATTLEBORO — A monthly social event for women who love women kicks off Saturday, Sept. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Backside Café on High Street.
Sponsored by LGBTQ nonprofit group Green Mountain Crossroads, these socials are set for the third Saturday of each month at the same time and location.
Deborah Potter, GMC's executive director, said in an event announcement that when GMC launched in January a number of women the group aimed to serve reported that social options for this community were lacking.
“Our primary mission is to promote connection and opportunities for our rural community, so we started surveying and interviewing women. The concept of a simple evening get-together to meet and socialize was the most popular,” Potter said in the group's event announcement.
The social welcomes all women who love women, both couples and singles, and offers free refreshments and a cash bar, Potter said.
She noted that similar events already exist for other segments of the LGBTQ community: a monthly social for gay and bisexual men draws some 40 men to the Backside Café on the preceding Saturdays, she said.
“And our Trans and Queer Potluck, on the last Wednesday night of each month, also gets a good crowd,” Potter said.
Potter added that attendance is high for a group GMC launched on the third Monday of the month, for parents of transgender and gender-questioning youth.
In the big picture, GMC is striving to create more social, entertainment, and educational events for the full spectrum of the rural LGBTQ community, Potter said.
The organization's next community-wide offering is “Self-Care for the Whole Person,” a health and wellness day on Saturday, Nov. 9.
Potter said more information about that was forthcoming, and that it would be promoted at the Wellness in Windham Fair at the end of September.
