• In Jan Juc, Australia, Sept. 1, 2013, a daughter, Emma Lynn Barnard, to Lochlan and Lynna (Barrett) Barnard; grandaughter to Lynn Barrett of Dummerston Center; great-grandaughter to the late Russell R. “Bob” and Virginia “Ginna” Barrett; niece to John Grumeza and Bobby Grumeza; great-niece of Randi and Russ Barrett.

• Richard “Rick” Parker Bingham, 61, of Troy N.H. Died Aug. 22 after a short bat­tle with cancer. Partner of Kelly Watson, and her children Shannon and Eric Watson, for 26 years. Father of Emily Britt of Keene, N.H., and Elysia Bingham of Sullivan, N.H. Brother of Edward Bingham of Enfield, N.H., and Pa­mela Adams of Sutton, Mass. Born in Alameda, Calif., the son of Pearl and Leo­nard Bingham, he graduated from Bellows Falls High School in 1970 and en­listed in the Navy in 1971. After serv­ing for 4 years on the Guided Missile Cruis­er USS Richmond K. Turner (DLG-20), he was honorably discharged and settled in Troy. He worked at Troy Mills as the lead power plant operator until it closed in 2002. He then worked at the Brattleboro Retreat in a similar capacity until his death. Memorial information: A memorial service was held Aug. 28 at Foley Funeral Home in Keene, N.H., with a burial at Moun­tain View Cemetery in Troy, N.H. Donations to the American Cancer Society or the Monadnock Humane Society.

• Barbara Grace Richardson Furman, 92, of South Royalton. Died Aug. 31 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Wife of the late Alden W. Furman for 48 years. Mother of Patricia J. Stender of West Hartford, Robert A. Furman of Chester, and Richard W. Furman of Hartford. Born in Quechee, the daughter of the late Grace Perkins Richardson and Frank Richardson, she attended schools in Quechee and Andover N.H., graduating from Andover High School. She was active in the South Royalton Women's Club, and volunteered her time each year at Town Meeting for the voter check list. She was employed by Vermont Life of Montpelier, Readex Newsbank of Chester, and the Orange/Windsor School District. She enjoyed her family, reading, and her flower beds. • Clayton Edward “Bud” Kathan, 85, of Bellows Falls. Died Aug. 30 at Springfield Hospital. Husband of Dolores “Doe” Currier Kathan for 66 years. Father of Pam Kathan of Bellows Falls, Thomas Kathan of Dalton, N.H., and the late David and Bonnie Kathan. Brother of Carol Miller of West Brattleboro and the late Virginia, Dexter Jr., William, and Robert Kathan. Born in Putney, the son of the late Gladys S. and Dexter W. Kathan Sr., he attended schools in Putney and Brattleboro. He served in the Navy, assigned to the heavy cruiser USS Columbus during World War II. After the war, he sold insurance for Equitable Life Assurance, worked for the Bellows Falls Police for 20 years and with the Windham County Sheriff's Department for more than 40 years. A graduate the Vermont Police Academy and U.S. Marshals School, he was the first full-time court officer in Vermont. His tenor voice rang out at Mass at St. Charles Church in Bellows Falls. He sang for weddings and funerals, and he was a member of The Yankee Male Chorus. He was a distinguished woodworker, and an avid outdoorsman. He and his wife traveled extensively in their motor home throughout the continental United States. Memorial information: A funeral Mass was held Sept. 3 at St. Charles Church, with burial at St. Charles Cemetery in Westminster. • Bertha (Morse) Lapine, 69, of Springfield, Vt., formerly of Windsor and Brat­tleboro. Died Au­g. 28 at Baystate Frank­lin Medical Center in Greenfield, Mass. Wife of Robert Lapine. Sister of Alfred and Harry Morse, Ruth Taylor and the late Rose Owsiak, Dorothy Giammarco, Edward Morse, and Charles Morse. Born in Brattleboro, the daugh­ter of the late Alfred Carl Morse, Sr. and Arline (Cudworth) Morse, she attended and graduated from the Austine School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Brat­tleboro. She and her husband worked together at the Springfield Re­cycling Center. She was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor, and a member of the Elks Club in Windsor for 16 years. She enjoyed knitting and other handcrafts, as well as card games, dominoes, and word search puzzles. Memorial information: A funeral Mass was held at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor. • Robert C. Morse, 87, of Guilford. Died Aug, 25. Husband of Sylvia Smith Morse. Father of Sheila, Claire, Dale, Paul, and Charles. Brother of Harry Morse of Vernon and Marion Bemis of Indianapolis. He was born and raised in Brattleboro, the son of the late Carrie Humphrey Morse and Clarence Morse, the 10th of 11 siblings, nine of whom survived to adulthood. He graduated from Brattleboro High School, president of the Class of 1944. He served two years stateside in the Army Air Force during World War II. After the war, he worked with his brother at Harry's Auto Body Shop. Later, he worked for Central Vermont Public Service, repairing electrical appliances. In 1963, CVPS transferred him to Springfield, where he later started his own appliance repair service, retiring in 1991. He and his wife then operated their Springfield home as a B & B, where he was known for his welcoming ways, and from which sprang many lasting friendships. In 2006, they moved to Guilford with family. He was an Eagle Scout, then a scoutmaster who co-led his troop on an end-to-end hike of Vermont's Long Trail. In 1954-55, with very little assistance, he built a home for his growing family. For many years, he was an active member of the Springfield United Church of Christ, leaving a legacy of small construction contributions. His was an exceptional life, full in every sense of the word. Memorial information: A service was held Aug. 31 at the Guilford Community Church. Interment was private. Donations to Habitat for Humanity, which was an organization that he supported; the Guilford Community Church; the Springfield (Vermont) First Congregational Church; or to a charity of your choice. • Paul E. Mousel, 68, of Putney. Died Aug. 27 at North Adams (Mass.) Regional Hospital while on business in the city. Husband of Patricia Buckholz Mousel for 42 years. Father of Benjamin Mousel and wife-to-be, Emily Thurston, of Putney, and Leah Mousel Austin and her husband, Jeffrey, of Brookline. Brother of Duane Mousel of Nevada, Iowa, and Joan Mousel Brummel of Pella, Iowa. He was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Paul F. and Gladys (Larson) Mousel. He was raised and educated in Nevada, Iowa, graduating from Nevada High School, Class of 1964. He went on to attend Eastern New Mexico University on a basketball scholarship and later Northwest Missouri University where he earned his B.S. in physical education and biology. An accomplished basketball player, he played semi-pro basketball following college in Des Moines, Iowa. He also worked for the Oscar Meyer Co. He moved to Putney in 1979, and for many years, he owned and operated Mountain Paul's General Store in Putney and Putney Laundry. At the time of his death, he owned Big Worm Bait & Tackle for the past 12 years. He coached basketball at Bellows Falls Union High School, Landmark College in Putney and Putney Central School. He enjoyed golf, fishing, and time shared with his family, especially with his grandson Quinn. He was also an avid New England Patriots fan and, for many years, was a season ticket holder. He was well known for his spirit of kindness and generosity as well as his wonderful sense of humor. Memorial information: A memorial service in celebration of his life will be conducted on Monday, Sept. 9, at 11:30 a.m., at the West Village Meeting House on South Street. • Glenn J. Pike, 87, a resident of the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, formerly of Wilmington. Died Aug. 23. Father of Lisa Gilbeau and her hus­band, Dan, of Salisbury, N.C.; and Barry Pike and his wife, Di­ane, of Lilburn, Ga. Born in Wilmington, the son of the late Le­land A. and Ruth L. (Johnson) Pike, he attended local schools, graduating from Wilmington High School. After high school, he enlist­ed in the Navy and served his country during World War II. He later went to work for Dunham Shoe and Emerson's Furniture in Bratteboro, and then worked in maintenance for Marl­boro College for many years. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved hunting and fishing. He enjoyed hiking Haystack Moun­tain and cherished times spent with family and friends. Memorial information: At his request, there was no formal fu­neral service. A small gathering for family and friends to cele­brate his life was held Aug. 29, 2013 at his home in Wil­mington.
