Athens Community Supper returns with 'Share the Harvest' table
ATHENS - September brings the return of community suppers to Athens. On the first Friday of the month from September through June, join friends and neighbors in the basement of the Athens Community Church at 6 p.m. for a delicious meal and treats from the dessert buffet table.
For the months of September and October, organizers will sponsor a “Share the Harvest” table. Community members can bring the excess from their home gardens to share with their neighbors who don't have gardens.
Anyone attending the supper is invited to bring home some of this local garden bounty for their family table (leave the over-grown, over ripe or spoiled items for the compost pile).
Any leftover produce will be taken to the Townshend Food Shelf for distribution the following Monday. The Athens Community Supper is sponsored by Grafton Cares. For more information, call Dennis and Karen at 802-869-2674.
1791 House restored and open to tour in Guilford
GUILFORD - About five years ago the 1791 Bullock-Ashworth House on Ashworth Road was purchased by Sara Coffey and her husband David Snyder for the purpose of housing visiting artists who are working at the recording studios of Guilford Sound and Vermont Performance Lab (VPL). The public is invited to tour the house on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 1 to 3 p.m., to see what has been accomplished.
The land around the house has been cleared of a later ell and a deteriorating barn, leaving a classic colonial New England country home with beautiful views. The rear terrace, recently added, looks south and west over the hills of Guilford. Amazingly, after over 200 years, the original wood work is preserved, both indoors and out.
Cleaned and repaired, featuring handmade hardware, the house offers a glimpse of how different the post-Revolutionary buildings were from the log structures of the first settlers. Built by Captain Lovell Bullock over a period of 10 years, completed in 1791 and lived in by his descendants until 1901, the house passed to the Ashworth family in 1910 and was occupied by “Herm” (Herman) Ashworth until his death in 2006.
The open house, hosted by the Guilford Historical Society and VPL, will include a display on the Bullocks. The house has been furnished with “country” antiques from the periods when it was an active Vermont farm. It is not handicapped accessible as there is a stone stoop and narrow winding stairs inside, but even the exterior is worth seeing. Refreshments will be served.
The house is located at 569 Ashworth Road, which leaves Bonnyvale Road to the east just before the junction with the Guilford Center Road.

Items needed for upcoming Hospice auction
BRATTLEBORO - Brattleboro Area Hospice is sponsoring the Cherished Goods Auction on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the VFW.
In addition to the usual auction items, a creative, artistic event has also been added to the evening. This fun fundraiser is your chance to help Hospice in return for the many ways they help our community.
Hospice particularly needs pieces of good furniture to be auctioned off by Kit Martin in order to make this a successful fundraiser. So scour your attic, basement, garage and dresser drawers for high quality, good condition jewelry, paintings, china, glassware, decorative items and, particularly, furniture.
To donate an item, call Greg Moschetti at 802-254-8714 or Gordon Bristol at 802-257-5594 for donation pick-up, or you can drop off smaller items at the Hospice office located at 191 Canal St. in Brattleboro. Do not drop items at the Hospice Experienced Goods Thrift Shop on Flat Street.
A unique touch for the Cherished Goods Auction this year is a selection of mirrors that have been refurbished, hand-painted, and otherwise embellished by local artists to be put up for bidding. Watch for more information about that as the auction date nears.
All proceeds directly support the hospice care and bereavement services that are completely free of charge in our community provided by Brattleboro Area Hospice.
