BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) awarded five college scholarships for the 2013-2014 academic year. Three high school graduates received $1,000 each, and two mature women, already pursuing higher education, received $500 each.
These scholarships are funded in part by the AAUW Annual Book Sale.
Recipients from Brattleboro Union High School included:
• Kellie Schiller, who will major in biology and pre-med at the University of Vermont. She was a National Honor Society member, served on student and class councils, was a student Rotarian for the Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Club, played ice hockey, soccer, and track and field, and was active in theater and Girls on the Run. She received the St. Michael's Book Award for Academic Achievement and Social Conscience.
• Tilden Remerleitch, who will major in international relations with a minor in anthropology or architecture at Sarah Lawrence College, and plans to work in international and intercultural education. She lived in Ecuador as a child, planted trees in Kenya as part of an Interfaith Youth Group, traveled also to China, and was involved in National Honor Society, Student Council, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Preserve Our Planet, and the New England Youth Theater.
The Leland & Gray Union High School recipient was Chelby Nystrom, who will major in business administration and Spanish, with a concentration in international business, at the University of Vermont. She was an after-school tutor for younger children, active in the National Honor Society, treasurer of the class of 2013, active in soccer, basketball and softball, and was in Poland and Slovakia with the Experiment in International Living in the summer of 2012.
The two mature women recipients were:
• Kelly Therieu, who will be completing her final year in liberal studies with a concentration in women's studies at Union Institute and University, Brattleboro campus. She has worked as an executive administrative assistant to the president at the Austine School for the Deaf and has volunteered with Vermont Theater Company, Brattleboro Museum & Arts Center, Women's Freedom Center, and on various food drives.
•Mimi Yahn, who will enter her final year in interdisciplinary studies and social justice at Goddard College. She is involved in social research on bullying and violence, and has worked with Vietnam veterans and on recovery projects after Hurricane Katrina and Tropical Storm Irene. Her other interests include world culture and diversity and gardening. She is a member of Transition Putney.
