GUILFORD — The town of Guilford will hold its annual Independence Day Celebration on Saturday, July 6, at Broad Brook Grange.
The event will begin with a 5K race and continue with a small parade with a marching band and two hours of family fun, food, and music.
Registration for Guilford's third annual 5K run is 9 to 10 a.m., with the registration fee of $10 benefiting the Grange Building Fund. The race starts at 10, beginning at the Grange, and takes a circuit past the Town Office and School, through woodlands and up Barney Hill, through farmland, and back through historic Guilford Center to the Grange.
Runners can win a number of prizes. John Majonen is returning to lead this event, and may be contacted for more information at 802-257-4067.
There's fun for the whole family from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., including a small parade forming at the school at 11 a.m. The parade steps off at 11:30 and proceeds past the Grange into Guilford Center Village.
Until 1 p.m., the Grange, which is sponsoring this event, is the place to be for local music and burgers and hot dogs. Several other Guilford organizations will add to the food offerings. Kids will enjoy free face painting, games, and other fun.
The Guilford Historical Society will serve free watermelon; Friends of Music at Guilford will sell ice cream and cold drinks along with T-shirts and other items. Guilford Free Library is staffing a book sale.
The Guilford Conservation Commission offers an exhibit on invasive plants, and might be joined by other town non-profits' booths. The Historical Society is planning to open its three historic properties in the village: the one-room brick schoolhouse, the Meeting House, and its museum in the old Town Hall. It will also lead a walkabout from the Grange to those buildings for anyone interested.
