Chris Lamb of the Andover (N.H.) Outing Club won the Fred Harris Memorial Tournament in Brattleboro for the second time on Sunday.
Lamb, who won at Harris Hill in 2010, is the all-time record holder for the longest jump off the 90-meter hill at 335 feet. On Sunday, he won the Fred Harris Tournament, which also doubled at a International Ski Federation (FIS) Cup event, with a leap of 322 feet for a total of 253.5 points.
Yuya Yamuda of Japan was second with 259.5 points. His best jump was 307 feet. Nicholas Fairall of the Andover Outing Club was third with 221 points.
Brattleboro native Spencer Knickerbocker was 14th in the 17-jumper field with 146 points. His best jump was 241 feet.
Conditions were challenging for competitors at the two-day event Harris Hill. On Saturday, for the first round of the FIS Cup, temperatures were near 40 and slowed down the jump. On Sunday, temperatures dropped into the 20s with blustery winds, which firmed up the snow but affected some of the jump attempts.
During Saturday's Pepsi Challenge competition, Nina Lussi of the New York Ski Ed Foundation was the women's winner with 192 points and a top jump of 266 feet, while Luke Daniels of the Andover Outing Club was the men's winner with 158 points and a top jump of 251 feet.
Emillee Anderson of the Flying Eagles Ski Club, who finished second to Lussi on Saturday, turned the tables on Sunday, winning the Fred Harris women's open division with 195 points to Lussi's 190.5. Anderson's best jump was 282 feet. Matthew Doyle of the Andover Outing Club won the men's open division with 194.5 points.
More than 4,000 people attended the Harris Hill events over the two days of competition, according to communications director Melissa Guilotti.
Girls' hockey
• The Brattleboro Colonels' girls hockey team has struggled this season, but they got to celebrate a milestone at their annual Pink at the Rink game at Withington Rink on Feb. 13.
Senior tri-captain Maddie Rollins scored one of the Colonels' two goals in a 2-0 win over U-32. It was her 100th point for her high school career, making her only the second girl in the history of the program (Emily Wilson, Class of 2012, was the other) to reach that level.
“This is an amazing and rare feat accomplished by few high school hockey players,” said Colonels coach Linda Burke last week. “Every season, Maddie has worked hard to be the best player she can be. She has carried this team on her shoulders many times over these last four years and I am so happy for her.”
Rollins, who is also a standout in soccer and lacrosse, is known for her hustle, her determination, and her leadership in every sport. She will finish her high school career as one of the best team players to wear the purple and white.
The Pink at the Rink event was a success too. It was a benefit for the Young Survivors Coalition, a nonprofit group dedicated to supplying support and services to young women battling breast cancer. More than $300 was collected via donations, a bake sale, and a “chuck-a-puck' contest.
Nordic skiing
• Brattleboro's Halie Lange completed her sweep on the Marble Valley League nordic championships with a big win in the classic race at Prospect Mountain in Woodford on Feb. 13. Lange won the 5.5-kilometer race in 18 minutes, 3 seconds, outdistanced her main rival, Rutland's Chloe Levins, by 46 seconds. Teammate Linnea Jahn finished 1oth in 21:33.
In the boys' race, the Colonels finished third behind Mount Anthony and Woodstock. The top five for Brattleboro included Graham Glennon (fifth in 17:01), Austin Lester (15th in 19:00), Oliver Pomazi (17th in 19:12), and Declan King (21st in 21:17).
Up next for the Colonels are the Freestyle and Classic State Championship races . The Freestyle Race will be held at Craftsbury Outdoor Center on Feb. 21 and the Classic Race will be at Prospect Mountain on Feb. 26.
Boys' basketball
• Leland & Gray faced Bellows Falls at Holland Gymnasium on Feb. 11, and the Rebels needed overtime before they could defeat the feisty Terriers, 46-41.
BF's Kendrick Mills led all scorers with 25 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter. It took two Rebels to equal that scoring, as Drew Barnum and Billy Nupp each scored 12 points. Nupp made three three-pointers in the third quarter, while Barnum had a couple of key baskets in the overtime period.
The following night, the Terriers lost another heartbreaker at home, this time a 68-65 loss to Otter Valley. Otters forward Ryan Kelley torched BF for 35 points. Trevor Wilson led BF with 18 points, while Mills added 17.
• Twin Valley needed a pick-me-up after a tough week, so having winless Black River stop by their gym on Feb. 11 was just what they needed. Colin Lozito had 15 points and 13 assists, while Dal and Cade Nesbitt scored 22 and 14 points, respectively, as the Wildcats hammered the Presidents, 74-27.
But the Wildcats' next game on Feb. 14 was the polar opposite of the Black River rout - taking on Leland & Gray on the road. They gave the Rebels all they could handle, but Twin Valley eventually came up short in overtime, 52-47.
The Nesbitt brothers again carried the Wildcats as Dal scored 19 and Cade scored 11. But the key to the Rebels' win was shutting down Lozito, as Zach Wilkins held the Wildcat's point guard to just four points. Riley Kenney led the Rebels with 12 points.
The following night, the Wildcats lost to Poultney, 52-42. Dal Nesbitt led the Wildcats with 24 points, including four three-pointers, and had 10 rebounds.
Girls' basketball
• Rutland broke open a close game with five three-point baskets in the first half and cruised to a 37-21 win over visiting Brattleboro on Feb. 12. Ari Harrison led the Colonels with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
The Colonels bounced back from the loss with a 49-45 win over Burr & Burton last Friday. Maddie Derosia and Kayla Savage combined for 22 points.
• Leland & Gray committed 38 turnovers against Green Mountain, and the result was a 52-32 loss to the Chieftains in Chester on Feb. 12. Alex Morrow led the Rebels with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Rebels fared no better at Arlington last Friday, as the Eagles made it a sweep of the three-game season series with a 47-26 win.
• Twin Valley used a strong 19-point effort in the final quarter to rally and beat Bellows Falls, 38-32, on Feb. 14. The Terriers were not slouches on defense, with 17 steals and 32 rebounds, but the Wildcats sank 13 free throws in the fourth quarter to ice this one. Abbi Molner led the Wildcats with 12 points and Jordan Niles added eight. Emily Dufault scored 13 and Chelsea Wilder added 10 for the Terriers.
