FEMA disaster recovery center in Brattleboro closes

BRATTLEBORO — The disaster recovery center of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in town closed on Tuesday.

However, federal and state officials are reminding Vermonters that disaster assistance is still only a phone call away for those who were affected by Tropical Storm Irene flooding.

Vermonters can can still apply for federal disaster assistance until Monday, Oct. 31.

Register by calling toll-free 800-621-FEMA (3362), online, or via a web-enabled mobile device. Multilingual registration assistance is available.

Those with a speech disability or hearing loss who use a TTY can call 800-462-7585 directly or call 800-621-3362 if using 711 or Video Relay Service.

FEMA is also closing disaster assistance centers in Woodstock, Killington, Northfield, Bennington, and Hartford this week. Nearly 3,200 applicants have visited one of the 11 sites that FEMA set up after the storm.

Centers will remain open in Dover, Ludlow, Rutland, Waterbury and Lyndonville. FEMA is also using a mobile disaster recovery office that is visiting towns in central and northern Vermont.

The Dover center, at 120 Taft Brook Rd., is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The center will be closed on Monday, Oct. 10, for Columbus Day.

As of this week, FEMA has approved $16.4 million in aid for Vermont homeowners and renters, and $6.7 million in Small Business Administration loans.
