Vermont Independent Media, Inc.

Vermont Independent Media, Inc. (VIM) was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2005. VIM's founders envisioned a forum for community participation that would build media skills among residents, students, and the disenfranchised.

The organizational structure of VIM reflects the best practices of nonprofit, cooperative enterprises, including a Board of Directors, an Advisory Board and a progressive workplace environment.

VIM is the umbrella organization for both The Commons newspaper and the Media Mentoring Project.

Our Mission

Vermont Independent Media is founded on the belief that independent journalism is critical for the functioning of democracy and is the lifeblood of our community.

Through the publication of The Commons, VIM:

  • Sets a standard for fair, balanced, and accurate journalism.
  • Provides an open forum for diverse voices within its community.

Through the educational dimension of our mission, VIM:

  • Provides opportunities for discussion of important issues within Windham County.
  • Provides learning opportunities and internships for young adults and others who want to engage in the essential democratic functions of a free press.
