BENNINGTON-The convention hall loomed around me. I was terrified of the fancy suits, the professional small talk, the daunting speeches. Why was I here - at 19 years old - and what did my voice matter?
Then I saw a face in the crowd that brightened my mood: It was my longtime friend, colleague, and mentor Isaac Evans-Frantz. You know that feeling when you're alone and then someone you admire and trust comes up to you to save the day?
That was Isaac, on the day of the Democratic State Convention, where I was running for delegate. Isaac came to my side and acted as my pro bono campaign manager, introducing me to others and boosting my confidence - and helping me win!
As a young person who grew up in the southern part of the state and engaged in local politics, my journey with Isaac starts well before May 2024. I first met him when he was running for Senate. He welcomed young people like me into his campaign with open arms - he allowed us to work on social media and edit content and lend our perspectives in meetings. We felt seen, heard, and respected.
Later on, I would get to know Isaac even better through guest speaking on his radio show, Vermont Viewpoint. He invited my colleague Iris Hsiang and me on the show to speak a couple times and authentically highlighted our voices. Whether we were talking about the 2024 election or foreign wars or homelessness, Isaac would listen and provide advice.
I still email or text him for support when I get stuck - or just to collaborate. He's a great partner, and I'm honored to be by his side as he runs for Selectboard in Brattleboro.
At this time in America, we need leaders who aren't just going to go with the flow but who are going to impact the tide. We need leaders who aren't afraid to speak out when things are wrong - even if it's difficult. We need leaders who value everyone in the community and equitably listen to us. I know Isaac will do all of these things and more.
I am excited to endorse Isaac Evans-Frantz for Selectboard because I know he will continue making a difference at the grassroots level, combining his skill for direct action with his skill for political advocacy.
As I think back to all the times I've interacted with him, I know for certain: the time couldn't be better to elect Isaac to office!
