Sign up now for Pre-K programs in Windham Southeast

BRATTLEBORO - Families with children who will be 4 on or before Sept. 1, 2025, and reside in Brattleboro, Guilford, Putney, or Dummerston are invited to enroll in Windham Southeast School District's public, tuition-free pre-kindergarten programs.

Programs are offered at Oak Grove School (with a satellite classroom at Canal Street School) in Brattleboro, Guilford Central School, Dummerston School, and Putney Central School. Their classrooms operate on the school year calendar.

Those who wish to receive an enrollment packet should contact their local public school as soon as possible. Enrollment packets are due by Feb. 14, 2025. If there are more applicants than available spots, a lottery system will be used to determine enrollment. For any questions, reach out to the pre-kindergarten coordinator at 802-579-1013 or [email protected].

Senior meal in Dummerston

DUMMERSTON - Evening Star Grange and Senior Solutions will sponsor their first senior lunch of the season on Wednesday, Jan. 8, with a breakfast menu consisting of plain or blueberry pancakes, egg strata, sausage, applesauce, and a fluffy fruit salad for dessert. Reservations are suggested but not mandatory.

Take-outs are available between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.; in-house seating is at noon. To reserve a meal, call the Grange at 802-254-1138 and let them know whether it's to eat in or for taking home. Because this is funded in part by Senior Solutions, they are urging folks "to eat in and visit with friends and neighbors. Make this a social event instead of just a meal." A suggested donation toward the cost of food and supplies is $3 for those 60 and older and $4 for the younger folk.

Mrowicki hosts constituent 'Zoom Room'

PUTNEY - The 18-week 2025 Legislative session begins next week, and state Rep. Mike Mrowicki, D-Putney, will host a Zoom Room for constituents of the Windham 4 District of Putney and Dummerston on Wednesday, Jan. 8, from 7 to 8 p.m.

"While it's clear that a top priority will be education funding and property taxes, one of the huge cost drivers behind high taxes is the cost of health insurance," Mrowicki said in a news release. "That cost feels even more painful with the reality that most of us are paying more and more for less and less. Fighting with insurance companies about getting a service covered is no fun for patients or providers, yet that is happening more and more."

Mrowicki wants to hear from constituents about their experiences, their suggestions for the upcoming session, and to answer questions. Email [email protected] for log-in information for the event.

Brown and Roberts's 'Round Up for Animals' campaign raises $3,556

BRATTLEBORO - In October 2024, Brown and Roberts Hardware, 182 Main St., hosted a "Round Up for Animals" campaign. Customers were invited to "round up" their purchase amount to the nearest dollar and donate their spare change to the campaign to support the Windham County Humane Society (WCHS).

According to a news release, the campaign raised $3,556 with the help of The Aubuchon Company, Brown and Roberts's parent company, which matched all customer donations.

"We are so thankful to Brown and Roberts for hosting the register round up and to all the customers who donated," said WCHS Executive Director Maya Richmond. "The community's belief in shopping local and local companies' desire to help local charities like WCHS strengthen the community. It is something special."

The donation will help fund WCHS's work. Each year, WCHS provides excellent care to injured and homeless animals and finds new loving homes for over 500 dogs, cats, rabbits, and other pets.

Brown and Roberts played its part by their recent adoption of two "store kitties," who reportedly love socializing with and entertaining customers.
