Trash, recycling changes made in Londonderry

LONDONDERRY - As of Dec. 15, Londonderry Hardware will no longer sell Transfer Station punch cards. Annual stickers and punch cards are still available at the Landgrove, Londonderry, Peru, Weston, and Windham Town Offices. The annual sticker price for Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2025, is $15 for residents and $40 for businesses.

The new location for purchasing punch cards for trash and recycling disposal will be from a vending machine at the Londonderry Village Market in Londonderry Plaza. The vending machine will accept only credit cards. Five-punch cards can be purchased for $10, 10-punch cards for $20, and bulk punch cards for $120.

As of Dec. 15, each trip to the Recycling Center at the Londonderry Transfer Station will cost one punch. Let the attendant know you will be recycling. Questions? Email [email protected].

'Blue Christmas' service at Newfane Congregational Church

NEWFANE - On Saturday, Dec. 21, at 5 p.m., Newfane Congregational Church on Church Street will hold a special grief-tending service - a "Blue Christmas" service - for those who need a healthy, sacred space to reflect together on one's losses and connect with the difficult feelings they're holding - the loneliness, the lament, the longing.

"When everyone around us is celebrating and expressing cheer, it can be especially hard to sit with, let alone express, such feelings," said organizers in a news release. "Through quiet reflection, ritual, gentle prayer, and supportive community, our Blue Christmas service offers sacred space to acknowledge and honor our experiences of grief."

Following the service, all are welcome to share in a simple soup and bread supper in the Fellowship Hall. Childcare will be provided, ensuring all who need this space can attend.

Annual Green River Carol Sing is Dec. 22

GUILFORD - The 61st Annual Green River Carol Sing will be held on Sunday, Dec. 22, at 5 p.m. at the Green River Community Church in Green River Village. This free community event was started in the early 1960s to raise funds to restore, rebuild and maintain the 185-year-old community church.

Traditionally scheduled for the last Sunday before Christmas, the Carol Sing is a mix of scriptures and classic carols, ending with a candlelight version of Silent Night. Pastor Michael Mario will again lead the service and local organist Bill McKim will play the historic Estey pump organ.

The church will be decorated, and following the service, cider and holiday treats will be served in the vestibule. Local children will act as ushers and bell ringers, and families are encouraged to attend. For more information, visit greenrivervillage.org.

Merry Mulch program returns at BUHS

BRATTLEBORO - The Brattleboro High School Music Department is once again offering their Merry Mulch Christmas tree collection service to Brattleboro residents. This program, going on for more than 30 years, is endorsed by the Vermont Department of Agriculture as well as the New Hampshire/Vermont Christmas Tree Association.

For a $15 donation, members of the BUHS Music Boosters will transport undecorated trees from homes and take them to be chipped into mulch. Since the town does not offer curbside pick-up of trees, the service saves residents the hassle of transporting their own trees. Three Saturday pick-up dates are being offered: Jan. 4, 11, and 18.

All pick-ups must be prearranged by calling one of the following numbers at least two days prior to your desired date: 603-533-1341, 718-986-9883, or 802-689-0581. Proceeds will benefit the Brattleboro Union High School Music Department.

Deb Albright and Mary Libby guide discussions around whatever thoughts, ideas and feelings come up. "Good listening and good humor abound," say organizers, "and all conversation is strictly confidential." There are beverages and snacks, and "new folks find it easy to join in."
