Healthy ways to deal with holiday stress

Is stress an unwelcomed guest during the holiday season? The Vermont Department of Health suggests considering taking a break from drinking alcohol during the holidays or start 2025 with a Dry January. "Reducing or stopping alcohol use can help you sleep better, have more energy, feel more connected with your community, save money, and avoid hangovers."

Many bars and restaurants have mocktail menus, so there are drink options when dining out or celebrating. To be the host with the most, holiday party givers can find classic and fun nonalcoholic drink recipes at bit.ly/792-mocktail.

Here are tips for meeting Dry January goals from the Vermont Department of Health:

1. Be clear about why you are taking a break from alcohol.

2. Plan your alcohol substitutions.

3. Don't apologize for not drinking.

4. Share your experience with friends.

For those who find it difficult to take a break from alcohol, they can consult with a health care provider, call 802-565-LINK, or visit vthelplink.org to connected with support and resources.
