PUTNEY-Next Stage Arts presents Ize Trio, performing music from their debut album, The Global Suites, on Friday, Oct. 25. at 7:30 p.m. Members of the Trio will present a free workshop focused on Middle Eastern percussion and rhythmic cycles Friday afternoon from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
"With global sounds from Palestine, Cyprus, and the U.S., this trio has been here in various iterations - every single time commanding an all-star performance and inspiring our community to ask us to book them again," Keith Marks, executive director of Next Stage Arts, said in a news release. Members of the trio are music professors who "prioritize a global sound, mixing their Jazz education with their cultural origins. This is the high water mark of performances, and we're overjoyed to have them come to southern Vermont."
Ize Trio - Californian pianist Chase Morrin, Cypriot percussionist George Lernis, and Palestinian cellist Naseem Alatrash - present a workshop focused on Middle Eastern percussion and rhythmic cycles. In their group, they explore the connection between these traditions and contemporary Jazz and improvisation. Join them for a clinic about multicultural music and finding one's voice. This workshop is made possible by Next Stage Arts and Cooperman Frame Drum Company.
The evening concert will feature music from their debut album. In a news release, Ize Trio members say they collaborate and perform "in order to create a more inclusive vision for musical communities and to raise awareness for immigrant rights." Drawing on their backgrounds and cultural traditions, they say, "we write original music and tell musical stories that are important in opening positive dialogue about the relationship between the U.S. and the Middle East. We seek to inspire musicians to add their cultural roots to the Jazz tradition and display how music can be a bridge to understanding and connection."
Next Stage is at 15 Kimball Hill in downtown Putney. Concert tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door, and $10 for access to the livestream.
