BRATTLEBORO-Mitchell- Giddings Fine Arts, 183 Main St., is commemorating its 10th anniversary with "Decade: 2014 - 2024," a gallery-wide exploration of printmaking by represented and invited artists.
The opening reception is 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 26, and a printmaking demonstration with master printer Dan Welden is scheduled for the following day, Sunday, Oct. 27, 11:30 a.m. The exhibit will run through Jan. 5, 2025.
Professional artists themselves, owners Petria Mitchell and Jim Giddings carry broad knowledge and insight into the world of artmaking and galleries. They have been steeped in the New England regional arts scene for almost five decades, and they say the creation of a fine art gallery provided an ideal opportunity to share conversation among artists, collectors, and lovers of the visible creative act.
When they opened their new gallery to the public in September, 2014, artist Wolf Kahn proclaimed, "You've brought Paris to Brattleboro!" And since its gala premiere (which featured seven artists), MGFA has introduced artwork by more than 100 artists from Maine to Hawaii and curated over 80 group and solo exhibits.
"While singled out by Style magazine as one of the nation's top art towns, and Smithsonian magazine as one of the best small towns to live in for the quality and number of its arts organizations and venues, Brattleboro has never had a gallery like Mitchell-Giddings Fine Arts. That is, a large commercial gallery with plenty of wall and floor space to show the kind of large-scale work favored by so many artists today," wrote Arlene Distler for ArtScope.
Mitchell-Giddings has chosen to focus on printmaking to mark its 10th anniversary display.
"Artist prints have been a notable and consistent interest of the gallery," according to a news release. "Printmakers value the sodality that's established around the production of the print, where artist and printmaker blend equipment, skills and vision to create a story greater than the voice of a single person."
Exhibiting artists include Matt Brown, Liz Chalfin, Elaine and Willem de Kooning, Eric Fischl, Stephen Hannock, Wolf Kahn, Emily Mason, Jules Olitski, James Stroud, and others.
