Fuel and energy assistance now available

SOUTH BURLINGTON-As Vermonters prepare for the approaching colder months, Hunger Free Vermont wants to remind people about the fuel and energy assistance programs offered by the state to those who need them.

A program of the Vermont Department of Children and Families (DCF), the Seasonal Fuel Assistance Program can help pay some home heating and energy bills for renters and owners, and pay for utilities separately or as part of the rental cost.

Residents may be eligible if their gross household income is equal to or less than 185% of the federal poverty level. Information on income guidelines and other program details can be found at dcf.vermont.gov/benefits/fuel or through the DCF Economic Services Division (ESD) district office in Brattleboro at 232 Main St.

The two-page fuel assistance application can be completed online, in person at a ESD office, or by mail. Dial 2-1-1 to be connected to a local agency. Those who are 60 and older can call the Helpline at 800-642-5119 for personalized assistance. To request a paper application, or for translation and interpretation services, call 800-479-6151.

Those who meet fuel assistance income requirements may qualify for 3SquaresVT, known nationally as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). It provides money each month to buy groceries and stretch food budgets. Nearly 70,000 Vermonters get benefits every month. Many more qualify.

The program provides people with money on an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, which looks and works like a debit card. The EBT card can be used to purchase food at grocery and convenience stores, co-ops, and many farmers markets statewide. It can also be used across the country by those who travel. To learn more, visit vermontfoodhelp.com, text VFBSNAP to 85511, or call 2-1-1.
