BRATTLEBORO-Palaver Strings' upcoming concert, "Dancing Home," at the Brattleboro Music Center (BMC) will focus on a new piece, Ḥawwāsh, composed for Palaver by the prominent Arab-American composer Kareem Roustom.
According to a news release, the piece "explores the interconnected nature of dance music and cultural heritage, our sense of belonging, and what it means to make your home in a new place. Inspired by the ḥawwāsh, or the lead dancer of a traditional dabke dance, Roustom's composition allows any musician to lead the ensemble at any given moment, sharing fluid leadership through physical and sound cues."
The performance is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 29, at 4 p.m.
Continuing with the dance theme of the concert, the program also includes Romanian Folk Dances by Béla Bartók, arranged by Alexander Goodin; "Syrian Dances," a Palaver Strings commission composed by Kinan Azmeh; "Dabke" by Kareem Roustom; and "moth," commissioned by Palaver and composed by Maya French and Jamie Oshima.
Performers are Tiffany Chang, Bree Fotheringham, Maya French, Grant Houston, Jesse MacDonald, and Yulia Price, violin; Brianna Fischler, Lysander Jaffe, and Elizabeth Moore, viola; Adalus Low Mansini, Nathaniel Taylor, and Kamyron Williams, cello; and Maggie Cox, bass.
Tickets are $20 for advance general admission, $25 at the door. They are available at bmcvt.org, by calling 802-257-4523, or emailing [email protected].
