VTC’s ‘Cyrano’ at Retreat Farm on Sept. 3 and 4

BRATTLEBORO-Vermont Theatre Company will present Cyrano at Retreat Farm on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 3 and 4, as part of their Children's Classics at the Farm series. Additional performances will be held at the Evening Star Grange in Dummerston Center on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6 and 7. All performances will begin at 6 p.m.

This is rescheduled from the original August performance dates at Retreat Farm.

Cyrano tells the story of Cyrano de Bergerac, France's greatest poet and swordsman. Cyrano desires nothing more than to tell the beautiful Roxanne how much he loves her but is convinced she will reject him due to his abnormally long nose.

When Roxanne becomes intrigued by Christian, a handsome but slow-witted cadet under Cyrano's command, the two men join forces to become her perfect suitor. Christian provides the handsome façade and Cyrano, the poetry. But how long can the ruse last, especially with the threat of an impending war looming over them all?

Based on the original 1897 play by Edmond Rostand and adapted by Jo Roets with translation by Audrey Van Tuyckom, this version of Cyrano is designed with family audiences in mind. The classic French story runs a little more than an hour.

The 11 roles will be played by only three actors - Emmadora Boutcher, Anders Burrows, and James Gelter.

Then Retreat Farm performances will be outdoors. Audiences are encouraged to bring picnic blankets and chairs. In case of rain, performances will move indoors to Retreat Farm's newly restored North Barn. Performances at the Evening Star Grange will be indoors.

Tickets are $10; children 12 and younger admitted free. For more information, visit vermonttheatrecompany.org.
