BS&L Community Appreciation Day is Aug. 22
BRATTLEBORO - Brattleboro Savings & Loan (BS&L) hosts its annual Community Appreciation Day on Thursday, Aug. 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its Main Street branch. This event is free.
BS&L staff invite everyone to come and celebrate the amazing communities that they serve in southeastern Vermont. They'll have hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, and other cookout standards on their front lawn. BS&L's Putney Road branch will join the festivities at the Main Street branch.
WTSA will do a live broadcast from Main Street, and local vendors are providing food to help make it a true community event. Any leftovers will go right to the folks at Brigid's Kitchen, Groundworks Collaborative, and Loaves and Fishes to further give back to the community.
This year's Community Appreciation Day will be in honor of the late George Haynes who was the president of BS&L from 1992 to 2007. He was the founder of Community Appreciation Day and co-founder of Project Feed The Thousands. In honor of all he's done for our community, BS&L will make a $10,000 donation to Project Feed The Thousands.
Genealogy class offered at RFPL
BELLOWS FALLS - Wayne Blanchard will demonstrate how to navigate the expanding resources available online to find full text copies of family and local town histories on Thursday, Aug. 22, at 10:30 a.m. at the Rockingham Free Public Library. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops.
According to Blanchard, discovering online book collections can be a way to find family history. For those exploring their genealogy, family histories could be a way to help unlock secrets of the past and lead to a way to expand the family tree. Especially for those with some New England heritage, many town histories also contain brief genealogies of the families who lived there. Blanchard invites researchers to see what people in the past have put in print.
BF Woman's Club hosts pasta supper fundraiser
BELLOWS FALLS - Pasta is on the supper menu on Friday, Aug. 23, when the Bellows Falls Woman's Club (BFWC) puts on a feast to benefit its scholarship program. The line forms at 5 p.m. at the United Church of Bellows Falls at 8 School St., with entrance through the accessible rear door. Servings continue until 7 p.m.
A variety of hot and cold pasta dishes, homemade focaccia bread, a salad bar, desserts, and beverages are among the offerings to eat in or take out. Vegetarian and gluten-free options will also be available. The cost is $15 for adults, $8 for children 6 to 12, and for children under 6 years, admission is free.
The supper is a fundraiser for the BFWC scholarships awarded each year to graduates of Bellows Falls Union and Fall Mountain Union high schools. Further information about the local club can be found at bellowsfallswomansclub.weebly.com, or on Facebook.
Donations welcome for Moore Free Library book sale
NEWFANE - The Friends of the Moore Free Library will be accepting donations for their October book sale on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to noon, and Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 4 to 6 p.m.
Organizers say they are especially in need of books in the categories of fiction, mysteries/thrillers, classic literature, and children's literature. Guidelines for donating are available at the library or by emailing [email protected].
The book sale will take place at the library, 23 West St., on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12 and 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Guilford Chamber Singers seek voices for Christmas Concert
GUILFORD - Enrollment in the Guilford Chamber Singers is now open to all choral singers for their Christmas concert, Dec. 13 and 14, at Broad Brook Community Center. All voices are welcome, with the repertoire being several settings of O Magnum Mysterium (O Great Mystery). The text describes the animals' wonderment as they look upon Christ in the manger.
The Guilford Chamber Singers have been together for more than 50 years, and are essentially an a cappella group. They give two concerts a year, in June and December. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings from 7 to 9 at the West Village Meeting House in West Brattleboro, starting on Sept. 9.
Tom Baehr has been the conductor and artistic director for 12 years, and also directs the All Souls Church choir. He has both a bachelor's and a master's degree in music education. Interested singers can contact Baehr at 802-387-2796 or [email protected] to enroll or ask for further information.
