Emily Margaret Band will perform on Tavern lawn in Putney

PUTNEY-The Emily Margaret Band is set to perform at the Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series on Sunday, Aug. 4, at 6 p.m. on the Putney Tavern lawn on Main Street.

The Emily Margaret Band is a teen quartet that merges R&B and jazz into what organizers call "an evocative musical journey." Drawing inspiration from artists such as Hiatus Kaiyote, Amy Winehouse, and Lianne La Havas, the band offers a "fresh and innovative sound that resonates deeply with listeners."

The band is fronted by the songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist Emily Margaret. The keyboardist is Adam Acker, Lewis Wells anchors as bassist, and Lucas Majer plays drums.

Margaret and Majer are students at Brattleboro Union High School, Acker attends Amherst Regional High School in Massachusetts, and Wells attends Amherst Regional Middle School.

"Collectively, they bring a youthful energy and fresh perspective to their music," say organizers.

Margaret wrote her very first song when she was 9 years old while attending June Millington's Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA) summer camp in Goshen, Massachusetts. Since that time, she has continued to hone her songwriting craft, studying at IMA, Miss Leticia's, the Antidote Workshop with two-time Grammy winner Sonya Kitchell, and more recently at the Berklee College of Music.

Some of her early formative performing experiences include The Lady & The Amp Festival at age 9, singing backup vocals for Lake Street Dive at Newport Folk Festival at 11, and at 12, playing a set of her own music at the Iron Horse, where she opened for the Boxcar Lilies.

Despite having met Acker at Miss Leticia's Music School in Amherst when she was 6 and he was 5, it wasn't until 2022 that they began performing together.

"We ended up being placed in the same group to write, and we quickly realized we made a great writing and performing duo," says Margaret in a news release.

Wells, another Miss Leticia student, joined the band one year ago, adding depth to their sound. They welcomed Majer into the band after seeing him perform at Brattrock, Brattleboro's youth music festival.

"Audiences can look forward to a diverse setlist featuring both original compositions and soulful renditions of classics by legendary artists. The Emily Margaret Band's intricate melodies and infectious grooves promise to make this performance a memorable highlight of the summer concert series," say organizers.

The concert is free and the audience is invited to bring chairs, blankets, and picnics. In case of rain, the performance will be at Next Stage, 15 Kimball Hill. For more info, visit nextstagearts.org.
