For the third time, Marcel wins national business writing award

The magazine VermontBiz (formerly Vermont Business Magazine) was at the annual National Alliance of Area Business Publishers conference this year, where it won two Gold Awards and one Silver Award for editorial content.

One of the Gold Awards was for Joyce Marcel's profile last fall about Green Mountain Power President and CEO Mari McClure.

Marcel, also a journalist for The Commons, earned the award for Best Personality Profile for her story, "Mari McClure: A Basketball Prodigy Takes an Electric Utility to the Future." She also won the Gold Award in 2016 and in 2006.

"As told in this story, it's a former University at Buffalo basketball star who channels her leadership skills and team-building know-how into running an energy company of the 21st century," the AABP said in a news release. "Thorough reporting combined with breezy writing creates an interesting story - and also makes learning about energy infrastructure enjoyable."

VermontBiz's publisher, John Boutin, said, "The judges obviously like the story as much as I and our readers did."

When told of the award, McClure said, "Joyce did a wonderful job getting to know me and reaching out to people who could provide more context. But most importantly, she did a great job distilling several difficult concepts relating to energy which people really benefited from."
