BRATTLEBORO — To celebrate the 55th year of the Brattleboro Winter Carnival, the carnival committee is raffling off a new Subaru Forester.
Tickets for the car, which was donated by Brattleboro Subaru, are $100 each and only 300 tickets are being sold.
The Brattleboro Winter Carnival, which began in 1957, has become a Brattleboro tradition, said former carnival president Rosemary Harris. The carnival committee is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization, and relies upon lots of help from the community to make the event happen.
“Our goal has always been to provide fun entertainment for all ages at affordable prices allowing families to take part in as many events as they chose,” she said. “The town merchants over the years have been very supportive in donations of either prizes, money or space. The car raffle will help us continue our goal of providing affordable family fun.”
The 2011 carnival will take place on Feb. 18-27. It is one of the oldest ongoing winter carnivals in the nation.
The Brattleboro Winter Carnival features a variety show, a Queen's and Princess pageant, sleigh rides, sugar on snow, a chili cook-off, lots of children's activities, a scavenger hunt, ice hockey and figure skating exhibitions, fireworks and an ice fishing derby, among other events happening throughout the town.
Raffle tickets are available at The Shoe Tree, Vermont Artisans Design, Brattleboro Subaru and from Winter Carnival committee members. One may also request a ticket from their website, www.brattleborowintercarnival.org.
The drawing will take place on Oct. 23 at the Murder Mystery Dinner (location and time still to be determined). Ticket holders need not be present to win. Tax, title and registration are not included.
