Town announces Thanksgiving closures
BRATTLEBORO - In Observance of Thanksgiving, all Town Offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24 and Friday, Nov. 25, with the exception of emergency services.
Brooks Memorial Library will close at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23. They will be closed on Nov. 24 but will remain open during normal business hours on Nov. 25.
Trash and recycling will not be picked up on Nov. 24. All trash and recycling pick-up will be delayed by one day all week.
Thanksgiving service at Christian Science Church and online
BRATTLEBORO - A Thanksgiving Day service for the community is planned for 10:30 a.m. at First Church of Christ, Scientist, 57 Putney Road.
The service includes readings from the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy; music for the occasion; and testimonies of gratitude. The hour-long service will be held in person and via Zoom at csbrattleboro.org.
Valley Cares holds silent auction
TOWNSHEND - For those ready to start their shopping, or treating themselves to a little something special, Valley Cares, Inc. is holding a silent Auction through Wednesday, Nov. 30.
The selection of gift certificates and goods from local artisans, restaurants, and businesses is at bit.ly/691-auction.
Proceeds from the auction will go to the Valley Cares, Inc. operating budget to help them continue providing excellent affordable housing and assistive services to seniors in a home-like environment.
Winter Farmers Market opens for season
PUTNEY - The Putney Winter Farmers' Market will be held indoors at Green Mountain Orchards, 130 West Hill Rd., on Sundays through Dec. 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Organic meats, cheeses, breads, and fruits and vegetables from area farms and producers will be available, along with locally made holiday gifts which include everything from handmade candles, herbal remedies and soap, to jewelry, textiles, and artwork.
Second meeting set for Brattleboro Walk/Bike Plan
BRATTLEBORO - The town of Brattleboro thanks everyone who participated in the first public meeting for Brattleboro's Walk/Bike Action Plan in late September.
Based on feedback, the Planning Department said in a news release that due to “gaps in the town's walking and bicycling network, and in consideration of future town and VTrans projects, some recommendations have been developed. They have been categorized into short-, medium-, and long-term projects that will further connect the town's evolving network of sidewalks, bike facilities, and shared-use paths.”
A second public meeting will be held on Monday, Nov. 28, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. All who are interested are invited to see what has been proposed and to share thoughts on the projects themselves and their sequencing.
The meeting will be held virtually on Zoom, but participants are alsowelcome to join in-person at the Selectboard Meeting Room at the Municipal Center for those without access to a computer or phone. The meeting link is bit.ly/691-plan. The meeting ID is 852 5032 1051 and the passcode is 608591.

Monthly free produce available
PUTNEY - The Vermont Foodbank and the Putney Foodshelf will co-sponsor the next monthly drop of free produce and some nonperishable items on Thursday, Nov. 29, from 9 to 9:45 a.m. on Alice Holloway Drive (in front of Putney Meadows, the white building across from the Putney Co-op and Putney Fire Station.)
All are welcome. Because of COVID-19, remain in your car at pickup, and volunteers will bring out bags.
Tax prep volunteers needed in Windham County Areas
WESTMINSTER - Southeastern Vermont Community Action (SEVCA) is seeking volunteers to provide free tax preparation for the 2022–23 tax filing season through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. VITA offers free tax help to people who are low to moderate income, persons with disabilities, elderly and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. SEVCA is now recruiting volunteers to help as many families as possible claim the tax credits and refunds available to them.
Volunteers will receive specialized training from a certified VITA instructor plus IRS online courses. SEVCA is looking for individuals who are willing and able to commit three to four hours per week from the last week in January to the April filing deadline.
Although prior tax preparation experience is not necessary, a commitment to training and certification is required.
Training sessions will be held in Westminster beginning in November and at participants' convenience, using online IRS self-study training materials. Main Street Arts seeks storytellers for January performance
SAXTONS RIVER - In the spirit of public radio's The Moth Radio Hour, Main Street Arts is seeking storytellers and singer/songwriters from the local community to present in the sixth “A Night of True Stories,” an event which will be held in their historic Saxtons River theater on Friday, Jan. 27.
Stories and songs should be appropriate for teens and up, derived from personal experience, and delivered without notes in ten minutes or fewer. No prior storytelling experience is necessary.
