BRATTLEBORO — The Vermont Center for Photography (VCP) presents “Mark Shaw: Selections from the Archive,” a historical exhibition which features a variety of photographic subject matter by the late photographer Mark Shaw (1921–1969).
Shaw is best known for his photographs of Jacqueline and John F. Kennedy, which he shot originally for Life magazine, and later as the Kennedys' unofficial family photographer. He developed a strong friendship with the Kennedys and regularly visited the White House during their time there, state organizers of the exhibit in a news release.
Shaw “was first and foremost a fashion and advertising photographer” whose freelance assignments for Life magazine had him photographing some of the most notable celebrities of the 1950s, including Coco Chanel, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Elizabeth Taylor.
The exhibition was made possible by Mark's Shaw son, David, who founded the Mark Shaw Photographic Archive in 1996 and selected the featured 96 images for this show.
“The photographs are for sale and vintage prints are also available for the public to see and purchase. This is a unique opportunity to see this renowned photographic work in our community and to support a local nonprofit organization,” organizers say.
After operating for 23 years on Flat Street in Brattleboro, VCP moved in September 2021 to its new spacious location on 10 Green Street, in the heart of the business district.
With its new gallery space and expanded facility, VCP is able to offer a robust range of exhibitions, services, and educational opportunities including a darkroom, digital lab, lighting studio, photography library, bookshop, and a thrift store selling used photographic equipment.
