Brooks Memorial Library Sci-Fi Reading Group begins Aug. 22

BRATTLEBORO - Join fellow sci-fi lovers for the Brooks Memorial Library Sci-Fi Reading Group. The group will be diving into some of the best new books the genre has to offer.

The group will kick things off at the library Monday, Aug. 22, at 7 p.m., with a discussion of All Systems Red by Martha Wells, the first novella in her Murderbot Diaries series.

A synopsis of the novella is as follows: “In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, a self-aware Security Unit hacks its own governor module while shadowing a team of scientists conducting surface tests on a distant planet. Disgusted by the humans, it could go on a rampage and live up to its self-assigned moniker, Murderbot, but it would honestly rather be binge-watching TV on a loop. All Murderbot wants is to get through the day. That is, until something else threatens to kill the humans.”

Beginning in September, meetings will be held on the third Monday of every month. For more updates, visit brookslibraryvt.org.

Reservations can be made by calling 802-254-1138 and leaving your name, telephone number, and number of meals wanted by Aug. 23, if possible, so an adequate amount of food may be made.

Library seeks public participation on planning for the future

BRATTLEBORO - Brooks Memorial Library will hold two community forums, one in-person and one via Zoom, to gather civic input on the future course of the library.

“It's important to examine our services and resources periodically to know how to best serve our community,” said library director Starr LaTronica in a news release. “The public's voice is essential in determining our direction and our priorities as we embark on formulating a new plan of service. The library is here for everyone, and we want to be sure that we hear the hopes, wishes, dreams, and needs of our users and our potential users. This is an opportunity to weigh in on what works well at the library, what can be improved, and even entertain some big ideas for the future.”

The in-person forum will be held Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m., in the Main Reading Room at Brooks Memorial Library, 224 Main Street. The venue is accessible to people using wheelchairs.

People may join the Zoom event on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m., at bit.ly/677-brooks. For more information call 254-5290 ext. 1201 or visit brookslibraryvt.org.

Guilford Chamber Singers seeks singers for Christmas concert

GUILFORD - The Guilford Chamber Singers, under the auspices of Friends of Music at Guilford (FOMAG), is seeking to reconstitute for their traditional concert of Christmas music on the second weekend of December. COVID-19 has prevented them from performing since 2019.

All voices are welcome for singers with choral experience. Repertoire will be quite varied, from traditional to modern settings. Rehearsals will be weekly starting in September, masked, on an evening convenient to the singers; in the past, it has been on Monday evenings, but they will explore other possibilities as they recruit.

A rehearsal venue is yet to be determined. In the past it has been in West Brattleboro, and there is the prospect of it continuing to be there.

The group has performed for many years at Christ Church in Guilford, but it is undergoing renovations this year and won't be available. The newly renovated Broad Brook Community Center nearby is available as an alternate venue.

Interested singers should contact artistic director Tom Baehr at [email protected] or 802-387-2796, or call the FOMAG office at 802-254-3600.
