Elks donate $4,000 to Home at Last

BRATTLEBORO - Brattleboro Elks #1499 recently received a $2,000 Grand National Lodge Grant, and the membership voted to match it for a total donation of $4,000 to Home at Last, a local nonprofit that provides permanent housing and support services to homeless veterans.

In a news release, Home at Last Chair Tom Appel thanked the Elks for their donation. “This will go a long way to meet the urgent needs that have arisen from the pandemic to help veterans of our community,” he said.

RFPL offers online wellness classes

BELLOWS FALLS - Now that the holidays are over, the Rockingham Free Public Library offers a chance to reconnect with certified wellness coach Carol Jones from the comfort of home.

Jones's free program will explore ways to embrace and maintain wellness, beginning Jan. 29 and continuing every other Friday through March 25, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., via Zoom or phone.

Get your taxes done for free with Tax-Aide

BRATTLEBORO - Beginning Thursday, Feb. 3 and continuing through Friday, April 15, AARP Foundation is providing tax assistance and preparation through its Tax-Aide program - and it's free.

Volunteers at the nation's largest volunteer-based free tax preparation service are trained and IRS-certified every year to ensure they understand the latest changes to the U.S. Tax Code. Assistance will be offered for both federal and state personal income tax returns.

Assistance will also be offered for Vermont Homestead Declaration, Property Tax Credit, and the new Vermont Renter Credit Claim program.

You do not need to be an AARP member or a senior citizen to use the service.

Tax-Aide will available this year, by appointment only, at:

• Brattleboro Senior Center (207 Main St.), on Mondays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 802-257-7570 to schedule an appointment.

• The Brattleboro VFW, 40 Black Mountain Rd., will be open on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 802-490-0937 to schedule an appointment.

Moore Library closed for repairs

NEWFANE - While the Moore Free Library is closed for repairs to the heating system, patrons may access items online (e-books and audiobooks), use curbside pickup, or request home delivery.

• To access an e-book or audiobook, visit moorefreelibrary.org/online-resources. All library card numbers begin with 2V6SD00000, followed by a 4-digit patron number. Call 802-365-7948 or email [email protected] if you encounter problems.

• For curbside pickup, make arrangements at least one day in advance of your preferred pickup day (Saturdays, from 10 to 11 a.m., Tuesdays from 1 to 2 p.m., and Thursdays from 5 to 6 p.m.) Search the library catalogue to place holds. If you do not know your patron number or password, call or email the library. Once the items are charged to your library account, staff will communicate with you when your items are ready.

• For home delivery, call or email the library to request your items, and the borrowed items will appear at your home.

Gentle Yoga classes begin at Williamsville Hall

WILLIAMSVILLE - Gentle Yoga is now being offered by certified yoga instructor Deborah Luskin at Williamsville Hall, 35 Dover Rd., every Tuesday at 11 a.m. This class is open to all ages and levels, and beginners are welcome with no experience necessary.

Bring your own mat, blanket, and props (blocks, strap, etc.). Vaccination and masks required.

There is no set class fee, but participants are asked to make a donation to the Hall ($10 per session suggested).

Deerfield Valley Lions offer Valentine cookie bouquets

WHITINGHAM - Looking for a fresh, locally crafted alternative to Valentine's candy and flowers?

“Give your sweetheart a beautifully wrapped box of homemade cookies,” say Deerfield Valley Lions Club members, who are now taking orders for cookie boxes in four flavors.

Cookies will be available for curbside pickup by appointment on Saturday, Feb. 12 at the parking area at the intersection of Route 9 and Route 100 South in Wilmington, with orders due online or by phone by Wednesday, Feb. 9.

All profits will fund local needs, including programs that fight hunger in the Deerfield Valley.

GIV taking applications for summer programs

WINOOSKI - This summer, high school students in grades 9-11 are invited to join a passionate community of young Vermonters at one of Governor's Institutes of Vermont's nine residential institutes.

At GIV, students will spend one to two weeks living on a college campus, immersed in a topic of their choosing. They'll learn from industry professionals, participate in hands-on projects and research, explore career options, and make new friends.

Programs include arts, astronomy engineering, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation, environmental science and technology, global issues and youth action, health and medicine, mathematical sciences, and technology and design.

Applications are open until Sunday, April 3, and tuition starts at $20.
