BRATTLEBORO — Are the 1970s finally making a comeback? If you're thinking of disco balls and sequins, probably not. But solar panels? Absolutely.
Awareness of peak oil, climate change and dependence on foreign oil have spiked in the last few years. And Integrated Solar, founded in 1975, has watched enthusiasm for solar power come full circle.
To celebrate its success and say thanks to the community, Integrated Solar will host a 35th anniversary celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21, at its site on the banks of the West River on 121 Spring Tree Rd.
The celebration is free and open to all.
“Without this wonderful community and its commitment to sustainability, we wouldn't have been here for 35 years,” explained Zephyr Soun.
People who arrive on foot, by bike, or via the town bus can enter a raffle to win a solar backpack, Soun said.
Encouraging sustainable travel options is just one of the party's eco-friendly elements.
“Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond renewable energy,” Soun said. “Our community's vitality depends on supporting local farmers and area businesses as well. We're excited to serve foods and beverages that highlight the abundance of Vermont.”
True to its values, Integrated Solar will also serve the food on sustainability manufactured, compostable dishes.
The 35th anniversary celebration will be family friendly, featuring entertainment starting at 11 a.m. by singing puppeteers The Annies. Crafts and activities for kids will be offered throughout the day, including a chance to learn about the Lorax Project and what families can do to help save forest ecosystems.
Outdoors, local bluegrass band Blind Rooster will entertain the crowd during lunch, from noon to 2 p.m. Soun added that the party will be a good chance to meet neighbors and community members who have made a commitment to living more sustainably, as well as local nonprofits working for sustainability.
“This community gives us so much support,” Soun said. “After 35 years in business here, we welcome the chance to say thank you.”
