• Jesse Jerome-Wrenn of Dummerston, a member of the Class of 2024 majoring in mechanical engineering, was named to the 2021 Dean's List at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y.

• Caya Greenspan-Layman of Wilmington, a member of the Class of 2022 at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa., shared an honorable mention award for fiction in the Edwin A. Miller Writing Awards and a first prize for feature writing in the Muhlenberg Weekly Journalism Awards.

• Tuckerman Wunderle of Bellows Falls, a member of the Class of 2021 at Emerson College in Boston, received an honorable mention award in the Critical Essay category of Emerson's 2021 Senior Writing Awards.

The following local residents were named to the spring 2021 Dean's List at Clark University in Worcester, Mass.: Morgan K. Brooke-deBock of Brattleboro, first honors; Abigail K. Cravinho of Bellows Falls, first honors; Liam R.S. Kennedy of Brattleboro, first honors; Nicholas M. Mitchell of Putney, first honors; Julianne L. Liebow of Townshend, first honors; Andrew M. Foster of Putney, second honors; and Jack T. Langeloh of Putney, second honors. Students must have a GPA of 3.8 or above for first honors or a GPA between 3.50 and 3.79 for second honors.

• Huxley Holcombe of Brattleboro, a 10th-grader at Worcester (Mass.) Academy, was named to the Headmaster's List for the 2020-21 school year.

Obituaries

• Grant Annis, 63, of Dummerston. Died August 11, 2021, in the presence of family, after a brief battle with COVID-19. Born on Dec. 20, 1957 in Brattleboro, to Donald L. and Glenna H. Annis, Grant was educated in local schools and was a graduate of Brattleboro Union High School, Class of 1975. A lover of all things mechanical, as well as an avid collector of items of local history, Grant will be remembered by his family, friends, and neighbors as a selfless soul who would give of his time and resources in time of need. Grant was predeceased by his parents and his beloved dog, Kelsey. He is survived by his companion Cindy Darcy of Dummerston, brother Glenn (Charlotte) Annis of Dummerston, brother Eric (Sharon) Annis of Brattleboro, as well as his nieces Kate, Maggie, Libby, and Sarah. and his beloved dogs, Mocha and Una. Memorial information: A celebration of Grant's life for family, friends, and neighbors will be announced at a future date. • Brian Francis Patrick Horrigan, 82, of West Brattleboro. Died peacefully on July 31, 2021, surrounded by loving family and friends, at his home on Valley Road. Brian was born April 10, 1939 to William and Ella Horrigan of Gardner, Mass. He graduated from Gardner High School in 1957. He joined the Army and served his country in the 82nd Airborne Division. He spent most of his adult life in southern Vermont and was a dedicated member of the National Ski Patrol, including a 30-year career in ski rescue in the Deerfield Valley area, including Mount Snow, Haystack, and Carinthia. Brian served several years as the Haystack Ski Patrol leader. Following his retirement from ski patrolling, he continued helping guest residents at the Ripley building at the Brattleboro Retreat. Brian is well known for his fun sense of humor and his unique one-liners; he did not mince his words. He also enjoyed a passion for World War II history. He became a life-long supporter of Bill W and friends. Brian had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way. Brian loved spending time with his sons and their families. Every summer for more 20 years, Brian and his family enjoyed “beach time” at Hampton Beach, N.H. Brian was predeceased by his parents, and brother, Paul Horrigan. Brian is survived by his sons Patrick Horrigan, Sean Horrigan, and Michael Horrigan; his two daughters-in-law Marcia Horrigan and Donna Horrigan; grandchildren Crystal Durocher, Sklyer Horrigan, and Shae Horrigan; and great grandchildren Sophia Durocher and Gemma Durocher; his sister Mary Roth, his brother William Horrigan, and many nieces, nephews, family, friends, and neighbors. Memorial information: A celebration of life for Brian will be held in the summer of 2022, to honor his spirit, joy, and connections with people; details to follow. • Francis Stephen “Bunny” Kerylow, 85, of Brattleboro. Died peacefully, with his family at his side, on Aug. 14, 2021 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass., following a period of declining health. Bunny was born in Brattleboro on Feb. 4, 1936, the son of Adam and Leola (LaFlam) Kerylow. He attended elementary school, junior high, and high school in Hinsdale through 10th grade, later attending Brattleboro Union High School and graduating with the Class of 1954. While in high school, he lettered in all three varsity sports: baseball, basketball, and football. He then went on to proudly serve his country in the Air Force, enlisting in 1954. He was stationed in London as a military policeman and, following his honorable discharge from active service in 1958, returned home to Brattleboro. He worked all of his career as a printer, employed most recently by Irving Perkins at Pagesetters, Inc., which he retired from in 1998. Previously, he worked at the former American-Stratford Company in Brattleboro for more than 25 years. Following his retirement, he worked part-time as a school crossing guard for the town of Brattleboro, a position he enjoyed since he loved children. Bunny was a member of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, Brattleboro Lodge #1499, held membership in American Legion Post 5, and was a former communicant of Trinity Lutheran Church in Brattleboro. Active with the youth in town, he coached Small Fry, Little League, and Babe Ruth baseball and also served as an umpire within the three leagues. He enjoyed following his children's and grandchildren's sports endeavors during the time they were being raised. Of his leisure time activities, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and time spent with his family. He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. In 1959, he married Jacqueline “Jackie” Wells. His loving and devoted wife of 60 years predeceased him in 2019. Survivors include sons Jeffrey and his wife, Nancy, Todd and his wife, Tracy, and Timothy and wife, Lisa, and a daughter, Martha, all of Brattleboro; one brother, Wayne Kerylow of Lebanon, N.H.; a sister, Sonia Hamilton of Hinsdale; and eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Andrea, who died during infancy, and one sister, Jean Ebbighausen. Memorial information: A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, Sept. 12, from noon to 4 p.m., at the Elks Home on Putney Road. • Lauria E. Lake, 76, of Brattleboro. Died peacefully Aug. 3, 2021 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born in Rowe, Mass., on Nov. 9, 1945, the daughter of John E. Clement and Myrtle (Coolbrith) Clement. In 1963, she married Sherwood D. Lake Sr. in Whitingham. They were married 57 years. Sherwood and Lauria Lake made their home in Brattleboro. Lauria worked at several area companies and, after retirement, worked part-time for the Visiting Nurse Association into her 70s. Both Sherwood and Lauria were active members of American Legion Post 5 and other public service groups in Brattleboro. She is survived by her sons Sherwood D. Lake Jr. of Townshend, Ronald E. Lake of Rockingham, and Robert J. Lake of Shelburne; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Samuel Clement, and sisters Mary Ellen Howland, Deloris Young, Marion Priest, and Korriene McClean, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Sherwood; brothers John Jr., James and Joe; and sisters, Barbara, Doris and Marjorie. • June Irene (Powers) Manning, 91, of Guilford. Died peacefully Aug. 12, 2021, surrounded by her loving family at the home of her daughter, Susan Manning Ross. June was born in Brattleboro on April 5, 1930 to Harry Leon Powers and Irene Lola (Barnes) Powers. She resided in Marlboro with her parents and her brother, Leon (Buddy) Powers, on the family farm. Following graduation from Brattleboro High School in 1948, she married the love of her life, Robert Parle Manning, and they remained in Brattleboro, raising their family of five children. Robert predeceased her in 1997. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she most enjoyed spending time with her family. Having grown up on the family farm she had a heart for all animals from horses to cats. While battling Alzheimer's in her later years, she lived with her daughter Susan, and her husband, Dave, with grandchildren, Rashka and Elsa, on their farm in Guilford, along with several horses, dogs, cats and assorted animals that brought her great comfort and pleasure. June leaves behind her children, Stephen R. Manning, and wife, Gail, of East Longmeadow, Mass., Terry A. Manning, and wife, Peggy, of Brattleboro, Linda J. Manning of Guilford, David J. Manning, of Brattleboro, and Susan Manning Ross, and husband, Dave Ross, of Guilford; grandchildren Amy (Manning) Dusseault, and her husband, David; Jennifer Manning Higley, and her husband, Luke; Jonathan Manning, and his wife, Laura; Heather Manning Bauer, and her husband, Corey; Katie (Manning) Leuth, and her husband, David; Bret Manning, and his wife, Megan; Casey Manning, Rashka Manning Ross, and Elsa Manning Ross; and 11 cherished great-grandchildren, Taylin Bauer, Trey Bauer, Tyler Higley, Morgan Higley, Benjamin Higley, Sophie Dusseault, Henry Dusseault, Austin Leuth, Ireland Manning, Nash Manning, and Molly Manning. June was also survived by her brother, Buddy, and his wife, Ellen Powers, of East Lyme, Conn., and their son, Randy Powers; a niece, Karen Buys, and nephew, Thomas Manning, Jr., along with many cousins, and many friends and neighbors. June will be missed by all, but her spirit and grace will continue to live on in the hearts of her loved ones. • Norman G. Newton, 61, of East Bethel, formerly of Brattleboro. Died July 19, 2021, at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph. Born on November 15, 1959, in Barre, he was the son of Wayne and Gloria (Tew) Newton. Norman attended Berlin Elementary School and graduated from U-32 High School in East Montpelier. After graduation, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served as a combat engineer until he was honorably discharged in 1989. After returning from the military, Norman made his home in Brattleboro before moving to East Bethel six years ago. Norman worked for Bombardier and, later, Gorman Brothers in Albany, N.Y. In Brattleboro, he worked for ReNew Building Materials and Salvage and later joined the staff at G. Housen and Company Distributors. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, NASCAR, and watching the Boston Bruins. Most of all, he liked spending time with his family. Survivors include his brothers Richard Newton of Arizona, Douglas Newton and his wife, Leslie, of South Barre, Brian Newton and his wife, Marge, of Randolph Center, Stanley Carroll and his wife, Mary of Essex Junction, and Deane Newton of Brattleboro; his cat, Remy; and numerous nieces and nephews. • Peter Angelo “Pete” Salo, 71, of Winhall. Died Aug. 14, 2021 at home. He was born Feb. 3, 1950, and in his 71 years of life, he laughed, loved, and told great stories. He loved being a logger and took pride in cutting the logs perfect for the mill. Pete loved his wife, Sue, and their family of St. Bernards, cats, and horses. He learned every day and shared his knowledge with those in need. For Pete, there were only two seasons: hunting and the rest of the year. He is survived by Sue; his beloved brother, Patrick; and many siblings, nieces, and nephews. Memorial information: A gathering to swap stories was held Aug. 21 at the Bondville Fairgrounds. • Michael A. “Mitch” Smith, 78, of Cranberry Township, Pa., formerly of Brattleboro. Died peacefully July 23, 2021 in the care of his former wife and Pinnacle Hospice. Michael was born in Brattleboro on May 12, 1943 to Joseph C. and Anna (Juraszek) Smith. He attended St. Michael's Parochial School and was a graduate of St. Michael's High School, Class of 1961. Michael proudly served his country in the Navy overseas during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Michael was discharged honorably from Naval Patrol Squadron 26 in June 1965 and stayed on with the Naval Reserve through June 1967. He returned to his hometown of Brattleboro, where he was employed at UPS for 20 years. He held various jobs afterwards throughout the Brattleboro and Keene area up until his retirement. Michael moved to Cranberry Township in January 2020 to be closer to his family. He enjoyed fishing, painting, and spending time with his grandson. He was a diehard Red Sox fan and, like his father, would cry when they won and cry when they lost. He was previously married to Sharon (LaRose) Amidon and is survived by his two sons and their families: Shane, his wife Cathy and their son, Travis, and his wife Christina, as well as several nephews and nieces. Michael was preceded in death by both of his parents, his son Shadd and his brother Stanley. Memorial information: There will be a graveside service and prayers for family and friends at St. Michael's Cemetery in Brattleboro in the spring of 2022.
