Work of Procter, Goodhart featured in pop-up art show

BRATTLEBORO — Ceramic artist Stephen Procter will show his monumental sculptural vessels alongside painter Laurie Goodhart's images of ancient vessels and goddess-inspired motifs at a three-day pop-up art show and sale Friday, Aug. 7 through Sunday, Aug. 9.

Their work in the show, hosted by Main Street Brattleboro, will be framed by a collection of historical and contemporary Persian rugs curated by Jaja Laughlin of Nomadic Rug Girl.

Procter and Goodhart have collaborated on a series of painted vessels.

“I love the way Laurie's and my work flows between 2D and 3D worlds,” Procter said in a news release. “Viewers can't tell if the pots inspired the paintings, or the other way around. In fact, the influence is mutual. We are mining similar veins of inspiration, and her imagery on my pots takes them to a new level.”

Goodhart's paintings explore threads of continuity in human need and concerns through time. The themes she explores are both current and timeless: our need for sustenance, beauty, and grace, and visions of women on their own terms.

The presence of the Persian rugs echoes the timeless quality of the show's painting and vessels.

“The rugs are artworks in themselves,” says Laughlin, “and they are also a perfect foil for the paintings and vessels. The combination of the three makes the space feel sumptuous, like a museum or a shrine. The show is an experience.”
