New Moms Network meets at BMH

BRATTLEBORO — New Moms Network is a free service of the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital Birthing Center. Moms meet on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the Brew Barry Conference Room on lower level of main hospital. Programs range from handling a crying baby to fire safety, with much in between.

The BMH New Moms Network programs are facilitated by Dawn Kersula, a BMH Birthing Center nurse. It is also a chance for new moms (dads are also welcome) to network and learn tips from each other. Babies are warmly welcomed, of course, and need not to have been born at BMH to attend.

On Wednesday, July 14, retired BMH pediatrician Robert Nassau, MD, who runs Dads Training Camp, will present “What About Dads?”. His talk will feature the part dads play in the early development of babies including what goes right and what goes wrong. Dr. Nassau will also discuss frequently asked questions.

The importance of the first early days with a new baby will be the topic of BodyTalk therapist Suzanne Weinberg when she presents “Birth and Bonding” on Wednesday, July 21. Research tells us more and more about the importance of this early bonding. New moms are encouraged to come learn about it.

The following week, on Wednesday, July 28, a fun way to look at the ways babies communicate will be presented in a program called “Babies and Sign Language.” The program will also feature information on how signing can help your baby 'talk' to you sooner!

The next six-week Lamaze series begins Tuesday evening, July 13, and a One-Day Lamaze Birthshop is scheduled for Saturday, July 10. Call 802-257-8877 to register for either of these classes. Other perinatal classes include Breastfeeding Basics on Wednesday, July 14, and Baby Basics on Aug. 11, both starting at 6 p.m. If you are interested in attending a Sibling Class, call the BMH Birthing Center, 802-257-8226.

For more complete information online for any of these BMH programs, check the monthly listings on www.bmhvt.org and click on Healthy Babies Programs. At that site you can also get information about future Lamaze classes and other perinatal offerings at BMH.
